The Book of Deuteronomy
Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Bible. It is part of the Torah, or the “Law of Moses.” The name “Deuteronomy” means “second law.” That does not mean a new law, but a repeating of the law God had already given. Moses gave this message to the Israelites before they entered the Promised Land.
The book reminds the people of God’s commandments. It teaches them how to live as God’s chosen nation. Over and over, God calls them to obey and to be holy. The laws He gives include moral commands, civil rules, and ceremonial laws.
One part of the ceremonial law was the command to avoid unclean animals.
Clean and Unclean Animals in Chapter 14
In Deuteronomy 14, God gives the Israelites a list of animals that are clean (they may eat) and unclean (they must avoid). These food laws were part of God’s way of setting Israel apart from the other nations. They were holy, and even their eating habits were to reflect that.
Verses 3–20 deal with these dietary laws. They include land animals, sea creatures, birds, and insects. The section from verses 12–18 lists the birds that the Israelites could not eat. These birds were considered unclean. Most of them are birds of prey or scavengers.

Deuteronomy 14:15 Meaning
A List of Unclean Birds
This verse continues the list of unclean birds that began in verse 12. Let’s briefly consider each bird mentioned in Deuteronomy 14:15.
1. The Owl
The owl is a bird that is active at night. It is known for living in dark and lonely places. In the Bible, owls often symbolize desolation and spiritual darkness.
Isaiah 34:11 says:
“But the cormorant and the bittern shall possess it; the owl also and the raven shall dwell in it…”
The owl, though a fascinating creature, was considered unclean. It fed on unclean things. It symbolized loneliness and death.
2. The Night Hawk
The night hawk is another bird that is active at night. Some believe it may refer to a type of owl or a nightjar. It was considered unclean likely because of its secretive nature and its feeding habits. Night birds often symbolized darkness, secrecy, and fear in ancient culture.
God is light. He calls His people to walk in the light, not in darkness.
3. The Cuckow (or Cuckoo)
The identity of the “cuckow” is debated by scholars. Some believe it refers to a type of seagull or a bird similar to a vulture. Others suggest it may have been a bird that fed on dead things or stole the nests of others.
Whatever the exact bird, it was unclean due to its behavior. God wanted His people to avoid birds that represented impurity and dishonesty.
4. The Hawk “After His Kind”
This refers not just to the hawk, but to all birds like it. That includes falcons and other birds of prey. These birds are hunters. They kill and eat other animals.
In Scripture, birds of prey often represent destruction, judgment, or unclean behavior. God did not want His people to eat these birds because they represented death and violence.
Why Were These Birds Unclean?
These birds were unclean mainly because of how they lived and what they ate. Most were:
- Predators or scavengers
- Eaters of dead flesh
- Active in the dark or in lonely places
- Associated with spiritual darkness and death
God is holy. He wanted His people to stay away from things that represented sin, death, and impurity. Even in their diets, the Israelites were to be reminded that they were a holy nation.
This verse may seem simple, but it speaks volumes about God’s desire for separation from evil.
Deuteronomy 14:15 Application in Life
As New Testament believers, we are not under the Old Testament food laws. Jesus fulfilled the Law (Matthew 5:17). But that does not mean this verse has no meaning for us today. There are important spiritual lessons we can apply.
1. Avoid Spiritual Impurity
These unclean birds remind us to avoid spiritual impurity. We should be careful about what we “feed on” spiritually.
Are we feeding on things that are impure?
- Negative media
- Gossip
- Lies
- Immorality
- Spiritual darkness
Just as the Israelites were told not to eat unclean birds, we must not consume unclean things with our hearts and minds.
Philippians 4:8 says:
“Whatsoever things are pure…think on these things.”
God calls us to be holy in mind, word, and action.
2. Walk in the Light, Not Darkness
Most of the birds listed in this verse are active at night. They live in the shadows. But God is a God of light.
1 John 1:5 says:
“God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.”
As Christians, we must walk in the light. We must avoid deeds done in darkness—things we try to hide from others.
Let’s live openly and truthfully before God.
3. Live with Clean Habits
The birds in this verse fed on dead things or unclean prey. They were dirty in their habits. In contrast, we are called to live clean, godly lives.
Titus 2:11-12 says:
“For the grace of God…teaches us to deny ungodliness and worldly lusts, and to live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world.”
Let us feed on the Word of God, not on the garbage of the world.
4. Remember God’s Call to Holiness
The dietary laws in the Old Testament were about more than food. They were about identity. Israel was to be different from other nations. In the same way, Christians are called to be different from the world.
1 Peter 1:16 says:
“Be ye holy; for I am holy.”
God’s people must be distinct—not weird or arrogant, but pure, loving, and obedient. That includes our thoughts, actions, speech, and choices.
5. God Uses All Scripture to Teach Us
Even a short verse like Deuteronomy 14:15 has meaning for us today. All of Scripture is valuable.
2 Timothy 3:16 says:
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”
This verse teaches us that God wants every part of our lives—down to our daily habits—to reflect His holiness.

Deuteronomy 14:15 lists birds that were considered unclean under the Old Covenant. These birds—owls, night hawks, cuckoos, and hawks—were unclean because of their behaviors. They symbolized death, darkness, violence, and impurity.
Though we are no longer bound by these dietary laws, the spiritual lessons still matter. God still calls His people to avoid impurity, to walk in the light, and to live clean and holy lives.
