They teach us about faith, obedience, sin, and redemption. Below are 20 essential Old Testament stories that every Christian should know and reflect on.

1. The Creation of the World

Genesis 1–2

2. Adam and Eve in the Garden

3. Noah and the Flood

Genesis 6–9

The world became wicked, but Noah found favor with God. God told him to build an ark. Noah obeyed. A great flood covered the earth. Only Noah’s family and the animals in the ark survived. After the flood, God made a covenant never to destroy the earth by water again.

4. The Call of Abraham

Genesis 12

God called Abram (later Abraham) to leave his home and go to a land He would show him. God promised to make Abraham a great nation. Abraham obeyed in faith. This story begins the covenant relationship between God and His people.

5. Abraham and Isaac

9. The Ten Plagues of Egypt

Exodus 7–12

Pharaoh would not let the Israelites go. God sent ten plagues to show His power and judgment. The last plague was the death of the firstborn. The Israelites were protected by the blood of a lamb on their doorposts. This story leads to the first Passover and foreshadows Jesus as our Passover Lamb.

10. The Parting of the Red Sea

16. David and Goliath

1 Samuel 17
