Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Bible and the last of the five books written by Moses. The name “Deuteronomy” means “second law.” It is not a new law, but a retelling of the laws that God had already given to the Israelites.
At this point in the Bible, the Israelites are close to entering the Promised Land. They have spent 40 years wandering in the wilderness because of their disobedience. Most of the older generation had died in the wilderness. Now, Moses is speaking to the new generation. He wants to remind them of all that God had done and all that God had commanded.
Deuteronomy is a farewell message from Moses. He knows that he will not enter the Promised Land. But he wants to prepare the people to live faithfully and obediently before God.
Events Leading to Deuteronomy 10
In the earlier chapters of Deuteronomy, Moses reminds the people about their journey, their disobedience, and God’s faithfulness. In Chapter 9, Moses recalls the time when he went up Mount Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments. He explains how the people sinned by making a golden calf and how he broke the first set of tablets in anger.
Moses then describes how he pleaded with God for 40 days and nights so that God would not destroy the people. He interceded on their behalf. He begged God to forgive them and to remember His promises.
In Chapter 10, Moses continues to describe how he went back up the mountain. God gave him a second set of tablets. God showed mercy instead of wrath. Moses was with the Lord again for 40 days and nights.
This leads us to Deuteronomy 10:10, where Moses reflects on this second meeting with God.

“And I stayed in the mount, according to the first time”
Moses is reminding the people that this was not his first time spending 40 days and nights with God. The first time he went up, he received the Ten Commandments. But because of the people’s sin, he had to return.
Now, for a second time, Moses spends 40 days and nights with the Lord. This shows his dedication. He was willing to spend a long time away from the people, fasting and praying in God’s presence.
This also shows that spiritual leadership takes time, patience, and sacrifice. Moses was not rushing. He was committed to standing in the gap for the people.
“Forty days and forty nights”
This phrase is repeated to emphasize the seriousness of the time Moses spent with God. In the Bible, the number 40 often represents a period of testing or preparation.
- Noah experienced 40 days of rain.
- The Israelites wandered for 40 years.
- Jesus fasted for 40 days before starting His ministry.

Moses did not rely on his own goodness. He came before God in humility and faith. And God, in His mercy, listened.

James 5:16 says,“The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”
Moses’ prayers made a difference. His intercession helped save an entire nation.
“And the Lord would not destroy thee”
This final part of the verse is a direct statement of God’s mercy. The people had sinned badly. They made an idol and turned away from God quickly. They deserved judgment.
But because Moses interceded, God chose not to destroy them.

1. The Power of Intercessory Prayer
One of the strongest messages of Deuteronomy 10:10 is the power of praying for others. Moses stood between a holy God and a sinful people. He prayed for their forgiveness and their future.
As Christians, we are also called to intercede for others. We are called to pray for our families, our churches, our nations, and even our enemies.
1 Timothy 2:1 says,“I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men.”
When we pray for others, we are acting like Moses. We are bringing their needs before God. God still listens. God still responds.
2. God’s Mercy is Greater Than Our Sin
The people of Israel had sinned greatly. They had broken the very commandment that God gave them. But God did not destroy them.
Instead, He showed mercy.
This is good news for us today. No matter what we have done, God’s mercy is greater. If we repent and seek Him, He will forgive us.
Lamentations 3:22 says,“It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.”
God delights in mercy. He is ready to forgive. All we need to do is come to Him in humility and faith.
3. True Leadership Involves Sacrifice and Prayer
Moses was a strong leader. But his strength did not come from his own wisdom or power. It came from his time with God.
He spent 40 days and nights in prayer, not once, but twice. He gave up food, comfort, and rest so he could pray for the people.
True spiritual leaders are people of prayer. They carry the burdens of others. They seek God for guidance and help. They are willing to fast, weep, and wait.
If we want to be good leaders—whether in ministry, family, or work—we must follow Moses’ example.
4. God Listens to His Children
Moses said, “The Lord hearkened unto me.” That means God listened.
This is a beautiful truth. God listens when His people pray. He is not far away. He is close to those who call on Him.
Psalm 34:17 says,“The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.”
Sometimes it may feel like God is silent. But His Word tells us He hears. Like Moses, we must keep praying. We must believe that our prayers matter.
