To understand any verse in the Bible, it is important to look at the bigger picture. We need to understand what is happening in the surrounding verses, the chapter, and the book as a whole. Deuteronomy 10:7 comes from a powerful chapter in the fifth book of Moses.
The Book of Deuteronomy
Deuteronomy is a book of remembrance. The name “Deuteronomy” means “second law.” It is a collection of speeches by Moses, given to the Israelites just before they enter the Promised Land. Most of the people listening were not alive during the time of Mount Sinai. They were the next generation. Moses is reminding them of God’s laws, His faithfulness, and their responsibilities as His chosen people.
In chapter 10, Moses recalls the events after he received the second set of tablets containing the Ten Commandments. This came after the people sinned by worshipping the golden calf. God had shown mercy, and Moses is retelling how the covenant was renewed.
The Journey of the Israelites
Verse 7 is part of a short travel log that records the Israelites’ movement during their wilderness journey. These movements are not random details. They are connected to the spiritual lessons God taught Israel through hardship, obedience, and divine provision.
The specific focus in Deuteronomy 10:7 is on a place called Gudgodah and another called Jotbath. These places are more than just locations on a map—they are markers in the story of God’s dealings with His people.

Deuteronomy 10:7 Meaning

1. “From thence they journeyed unto Gudgodah”
The phrase “from thence” refers to their previous location, Mosera, mentioned in verse 6. Mosera was the place where Aaron, the brother of Moses and the first high priest of Israel, died and was buried. After his death, his son Eleazar became high priest.
From there, the Israelites moved to Gudgodah, which is also mentioned in Numbers 33:32–33. In Numbers, it is referred to as Horhagidgad, a name that scholars believe is simply another form of the same location. The name may mean “cave of Gidgad” or “ravine of thunder,” depending on the translation.
This place marks another step in the Israelites’ 40-year wilderness journey. Every movement they made was guided by God’s presence through the cloud by day and fire by night. So this verse shows us that their journey continued, even after the death of an important leader.
2. “And from Gudgodah to Jotbath”
Next, the Israelites traveled to Jotbath, which is described as a pleasant land. The name Jotbathah means “pleasantness” or “goodness,” possibly pointing to the fertility of the land or the abundance of water there.
In Numbers 33:33-34, this location is also mentioned and paired with the previous stop, confirming the travel pattern.
Traveling from Gudgodah to Jotbath suggests movement from a dry and desolate place to a land of refreshment and provision. This physical journey mirrors spiritual truths, as we will see.
3. “A land of rivers of waters”
This phrase stands out. After wandering through many dry and desert regions, a place with “rivers of waters” would be incredibly refreshing to the Israelites. In the desert, water is life. A land with abundant water points to God’s provision and blessing.
This phrase is not just about physical water. In Scripture, water often symbolizes spiritual refreshment, cleansing, and the presence of God. Think of Psalm 23:2:“He leadeth me beside the still waters.”
And also Isaiah 44:3:“For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground…”
In the wilderness, water was a constant need and sometimes a source of testing. But here, they come to a land full of rivers, symbolizing abundance and relief after hardship.
Deuteronomy 10:7 Application in Life
Even though this verse seems like a historical travel note, it offers deep spiritual lessons for believers today.
1. God Guides Us Step by Step
The Israelites didn’t choose their journey. God did. He guided them through the wilderness, from one place to another, with a purpose. Even when they didn’t understand, God was leading.
Likewise, in our lives, God often leads us through difficult seasons. We may go through places like Mosera, where we experience loss or change. But God doesn’t leave us there. He leads us to Gudgodah and then to Jotbath—a place of renewal.
Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us:“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
We must learn to trust that each step in our journey has meaning.
2. After Loss Comes New Leadership and Purpose
In the previous verse, Aaron dies, and Eleazar takes his place. The death of Aaron marked a transition in leadership. Yet, God’s plan continued. He raised up the next leader to carry on the mission.
In our lives, we may face loss, disappointment, or transition. But God always has a plan. He raises new leaders. He brings new opportunities. He never stops working.
Romans 8:28 says:“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
3. God Brings Us to Places of Refreshing
Jotbath was described as a land of “rivers of waters.” What a beautiful image. After dry and dusty paths, God led His people to refreshment.
This is how He works in our spiritual walk. We may go through dry seasons—times of difficulty, doubt, or spiritual weariness. But if we keep following Him, He will lead us to spiritual refreshment.
Jesus said in John 7:38:“He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.”
When we stay close to Jesus, He fills us with the living water of the Holy Spirit. He renews our strength and gives us joy.
4. We Must Remember the Journey
Deuteronomy is full of remembrance. Moses constantly tells the people not to forget what God has done.
Likewise, we must remember our journey. We need to look back and see how God has led us—from Mosera (loss), to Gudgodah (transition), to Jotbath (blessing). This helps us grow in faith and confidence.
Psalm 103:2 says:“Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.”
By remembering, we develop gratitude and trust.
