Moses explains that the reason Israel will succeed is not because they are great in number or power, but because God has chosen them and will fight for them. God had already shown His power in Egypt by defeating Pharaoh and his army. Now He will do the same for Israel in Canaan.
Preparing for a Battle Against Powerful Nations
The nations living in the Promised Land were large, strong, and well-prepared for war. From a human viewpoint, Israel had many reasons to be afraid. They were not trained soldiers, and they had wandered in the wilderness for 40 years. But Moses tells them not to fear. He reminds them of what God had already done and encourages them to move forward with faith.

Sometimes we don’t speak our fears aloud, but we still carry them inside. This verse shows us that God understands our silent doubts. He knows when we struggle with fear, even if we try to hide it.
“These nations are more than I…”
This is the fear of being outnumbered and overpowered. The Israelites looked at the size of the enemy and felt small. From a natural point of view, they were right. The Canaanite nations had more people, more weapons, and more experience in battle.
This is the kind of fear many people feel today in different situations. We look at problems, challenges, or enemies, and we say, “This is too big for me.”
The verse captures that very human response: feeling small in the face of a great challenge.

This question reflects uncertainty and doubt. To “dispossess” means to take something away from someone—usually land or property. In this case, it refers to Israel driving out the nations that were living in the Promised Land.
The people were promised this land by God, but now they are asking, “How can I do it?” This shows a lack of trust in God’s power. They were focusing on what they could do instead of focusing on what God had promised to do through them.
This verse is a mirror that shows how we often think. We see the problem, measure it against our own strength, and then doubt the outcome.

This verse was written for Israel, but the truth in it still applies today. We all face situations that seem bigger than we can handle. Here are some ways this verse can help us in our daily walk with God.
1. God Understands Our Hidden Fears
We don’t always tell people when we’re afraid. Sometimes we try to hide our fears, even from ourselves. But God knows our hearts. He knows when we doubt, even if we try to look strong.
The good news is that God is patient. He does not reject us for having fears. Instead, He speaks to us in those moments, just like He spoke through Moses. He wants to comfort us and remind us of His promises.
When you feel overwhelmed, remember that God sees your heart and cares deeply about what you’re going through.
2. Don’t Compare Yourself to the Problem
The Israelites were looking at the nations and comparing them to their own size and strength. But they forgot to factor in God. When we leave God out of the equation, everything looks impossible.
Instead of comparing your strength to the size of the problem, compare the problem to the power of God. He is greater than anything you face. With Him, you are never alone, and you are never weak.
Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
3. Faith Must Be Greater Than Fear
Fear is natural, but it should not control our decisions. Moses brings up this fear so that he can teach the people how to respond with faith. In the verses that follow, he reminds them of what God did in Egypt.
God did not expect Israel to fight alone. He would go before them. He would drive out the nations. All they had to do was obey and trust.
The same is true for us. Faith is not ignoring the problem. Faith is choosing to trust God in the face of the problem.
4. Remember What God Has Already Done
One of the best ways to overcome fear is to remember how God has helped you before. That’s what Moses does in the following verses (Deuteronomy 7:18–19). He says, “Thou shalt not be afraid of them: but shalt well remember what the Lord thy God did unto Pharaoh, and unto all Egypt.”
God had already shown His power. He delivered Israel from slavery. He sent plagues on Egypt. He parted the Red Sea. If God could do all that, why should they fear any nation?
When you are afraid, take time to remember. Think of the times God answered your prayers, gave you strength, or made a way when there was none. That memory will build your faith.
5. Victory Belongs to the Lord
The battle was never Israel’s to fight alone. God promised to fight for them. In Deuteronomy 20:4, we read, “For the Lord your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.”
The same is true today. We are not called to live the Christian life in our own power. God gives us strength. He opens doors. He gives victory.
When you face a big problem, remind yourself: God is with me. This battle belongs to Him.
