Moses is now old, and the Israelites are about to step into Canaan—a land promised to their forefathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Before they go in, Moses reminds them of God’s laws, His faithfulness, and the importance of obedience.
Deuteronomy is not just about law; it is about love and relationship. Moses pleads with the people to love God with all their heart and to teach their children to do the same.
Chapter 11: Blessings for Obedience

God is not only promising land but dominion. The people of Israel are to act in faith. They are not to fear the size of their enemies or the strength of their cities. If they trust God and walk forward, He will give them the land.
This part also shows an important spiritual principle: possession requires action. The land was promised, but they had to walk on it to claim it.
“From the wilderness and Lebanon…”
God is defining the boundaries of the land. The “wilderness” refers to the desert regions to the south. “Lebanon” is a mountainous area to the north. These borders are not random. They are strategic and rich in resources.
“From the river, the river Euphrates…”
The Euphrates River is to the east. It was considered a great and mighty river in ancient times. It ran through regions like Mesopotamia and Babylon. For Israel to claim land up to this river was a sign of great expansion and influence.

This likely refers to the Mediterranean Sea, the western border. This sea was the gateway to trade, travel, and interaction with many nations.

1. Walk in Faith
The Israelites had to step out in faith to receive the land. The same is true for us. God has promises for us—peace, purpose, provision, victory—but we must walk in faith to claim them.
Faith is not passive. It requires movement. Like Peter stepping out of the boat, we must trust God’s word and move forward.
“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” — 2 Corinthians 5:7
2. Obedience Unlocks Blessings
God made this promise conditional on obedience. Deuteronomy 11 repeats this truth: obey and be blessed, disobey and face hardship.
We cannot expect God’s full blessings if we live in disobedience. Keeping His commandments brings us into alignment with His will. This opens the doors for His favor.
3. God Gives Us Authority
In the spiritual realm, this verse points to the authority believers have in Christ. Jesus said in Luke 10:19:“Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy…”

- Facing lack? Claim Philippians 4:19 — “My God shall supply all your need.”

5. God Has a Purpose for Our Boundaries
God set clear boundaries for Israel’s land. In our lives, God also defines boundaries—where we live, work, and minister. Our job is to be faithful where He places us.
Sometimes we desire a different assignment, but God calls us to bloom where we are planted. As we walk in obedience, He expands our territory in due time.
6. Spiritual Territory
Today, we may not be claiming physical land, but we are called to claim spiritual territory:
- Our homes
- Our workplaces
- Our communities
- Our hearts
Through prayer, worship, and truth, we can establish God’s kingdom wherever we go. Like Joshua, we are called to take ground.
