What is the Book of Deuteronomy?
Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Bible. It was written by Moses, the great leader of Israel. The name “Deuteronomy” means “second law” or “repetition of the law.” In this book, Moses is preparing the people of Israel to enter the Promised Land.
Moses will not be going with them. He is old, and his time is near. So, he gives a series of speeches to remind the people of God‘s commandments, God’s faithfulness, and their own history. He wants to make sure they do not forget who they are and who God is.
What Happens in Deuteronomy 9 and 10?
In Deuteronomy 9, Moses reminds the people about their disobedience and how he prayed for them after they sinned with the golden calf. He explains how he went up Mount Sinai and received the Ten Commandments from God. But when he came down and saw their sin, he broke the tablets in anger.
Then in Deuteronomy 10, Moses tells how God forgave the people and gave him a second set of tablets. He also tells how he was commanded to build an ark of wood to hold them.
Right in the middle of this explanation comes Deuteronomy 10:6, which seems like a sudden shift to a travel note. But even here, God is teaching us something.

This verse seems like a historical or geographical statement, but when we take time to reflect on it, it has deep spiritual significance. Let’s break it down.
Deuteronomy 10:6 Meaning
1. “And the children of Israel took their journey…”
This part tells us that the Israelites were on the move. After God brought them out of Egypt, they wandered in the wilderness for 40 years. Their journey was long and difficult, filled with many lessons.
The Bible often speaks of the Christian life as a journey. Just like the Israelites, we are moving toward a promised land—our eternal home in heaven. Our journey also includes trials, lessons, and God’s guidance.
This short phrase reminds us that life with God is not standing still. We are always growing, learning, and following Him.
2. “…from Beeroth of the children of Jaakan to Mosera”
These are place names, and they may seem unimportant. But in the Bible, place names often have meaning. “Beeroth” means “wells” or “water holes.” “Mosera” means “chastisement” or “discipline.”
This movement from “wells” (refreshment) to “Mosera” (discipline) reflects a spiritual truth: sometimes, after times of blessing and refreshment, we are led into times of correction or difficulty. But both are from God and both serve a purpose.
3. “There Aaron died, and there he was buried…”
This is a powerful reminder. Aaron was the first high priest of Israel and the brother of Moses. He was a great leader. But even Aaron did not enter the Promised Land.
Why? Because he sinned against God at the waters of Meribah (Numbers 20:12). God told Moses and Aaron to speak to the rock to bring forth water. But instead, Moses struck the rock, and both of them dishonored God in front of the people. Because of this, neither Moses nor Aaron were allowed to enter the land.
This teaches us a hard truth: leaders are held to a higher standard. Obedience to God matters. Even spiritual leaders must walk in humility and fear of the Lord.
4. “…and Eleazar his son ministered in the priest’s office in his stead.”
Aaron’s son, Eleazar, took his place. This shows the faithfulness of God’s plan. Even when a leader dies or fails, God’s work continues. The priesthood did not stop with Aaron. God had prepared another leader.
This also shows that God’s work does not depend on just one person. People come and go, but God’s mission continues. In the same way, we should all be training others and passing on our faith, just like Aaron did with Eleazar.
Deuteronomy 10:6 Application in Life
Even though Deuteronomy 10:6 is short and seems like just a historical note, it gives us many lessons for daily life. Let’s explore them one by one.
1. Life Is a Journey with God
The Israelites were always moving. God led them through the wilderness, and each step had a purpose. Sometimes they were in green valleys, other times in dry deserts.
Our lives are like that, too. As Christians, we must understand that we are on a journey. We are not meant to settle in this world. Our goal is to be with God forever. So, every season—whether good or bad—is part of God’s training and direction.
When life changes or gets hard, remember that you are not lost. God is still leading you.
2. God Uses Both Blessing and Discipline
The move from Beeroth (wells) to Mosera (discipline) reminds us that God uses both refreshment and correction to shape us. When life is sweet, we praise Him. When life is hard, we still trust Him.
Hebrews 12:6 tells us,“For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.”
Discipline is not rejection—it is a sign of God’s love.
3. Even Great Leaders Are Accountable
Aaron was a high priest, but even he could not enter the Promised Land. His mistake cost him dearly. This reminds us that no one is above God’s commands.
In today’s world, we see many pastors, teachers, and leaders fall into sin. This verse warns us that leadership is not a shield from judgment. In fact, leaders will be judged more strictly (James 3:1).
We must pray for our leaders and also live in personal obedience, no matter our position.
4. God’s Work Will Continue Without Us
Aaron died, but Eleazar carried on. This is humbling. No one is so important that God’s plan depends on them alone. We are tools in His hands. When our time is done, He will raise up another.
Instead of holding tightly to positions or titles, we must be faithful to train others and prepare them to serve. This is called discipleship.
2 Timothy 2:2 says:“And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.”
Let us be like Aaron—faithful in our time, and ready to pass the torch.
5. God Is Faithful to Keep the Priesthood Alive
The transfer from Aaron to Eleazar also reminds us that God always keeps a priesthood alive. In the Old Testament, the priests were a special class. But today, under Jesus, we are all priests in a spiritual sense.
1 Peter 2:9 says:“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people…”
We are now the ones called to minister, to intercede, to worship, and to teach others about God.
