The Israelites had wandered in the wilderness for 40 years. Many of the older people had died, and now a new generation stood on the edge of Canaan. Moses wanted to remind them of what God had done and what He expected from them.
Chapter 6: A Call to Love and Obey God
Deuteronomy chapter 6 is one of the most important chapters in the Bible. It begins with a call to obey God’s commandments. “And it shall be our righteousness”
The word “righteousness” here refers to right standing with God. In the Old Testament, righteousness was often connected to obeying God’s laws. If the people kept God’s commandments, they were considered righteous in His eyes.
However, this is not self-righteousness. The verse does not say “we are righteous because we are good,” but rather, “it shall be our righteousness if we obey.” Righteousness comes from living in the way God has commanded.
This part of the verse shows that Israel’s righteousness was tied to their covenant with God. Obedience was the sign of that covenant.
“If we observe to do all these commandments”
This phrase adds a condition. Righteousness would come if the people observed God’s commandments. The word “observe” here means more than just noticing. It means to keep, guard, and do what God has commanded.
The verse points to complete obedience—not picking and choosing which laws to follow. God wanted full devotion from His people.

To live “before the Lord” means to live in His presence, to be aware that He is always there. It is a call to live with integrity, even when no one else is watching.

The final part of the verse affirms that these commandments come directly from God. They are not man-made rules or traditions. They are not suggestions. They are the words of the Lord.
Because God gave these commands, the people must take them seriously. He is holy, and His word is perfect. Obedience to God’s command brings order, peace, and blessing to life.
Deuteronomy 6:25 Application in Life
This verse has practical applications for our daily walk with God today. Though we live under the New Covenant through Jesus Christ, the truths found in this verse still guide how we live as followers of God.
1. Obedience Is Still Important
As Christians, we are not saved by the law, but by grace through faith in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:8–9). However, that does not mean obedience is unimportant.
Jesus said in John 14:15:“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
Obedience is the natural response to love. If we truly love God, we will desire to obey Him. Just like the Israelites were called to follow God’s commands, we are called to follow Jesus and live by His teachings.
2. Righteousness Comes Through Faith in Christ
While Deuteronomy 6:25 ties righteousness to obedience, the New Testament reveals that perfect righteousness comes only through Jesus. Romans 3:20–22 says:“Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight… Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe.”
In the Old Testament, people showed faith by obeying the law. Today, we are declared righteous when we put our faith in Jesus, who fulfilled the law perfectly on our behalf.
So, our righteousness is no longer based on observing all the commandments, but on trusting in the one who did—Jesus Christ.
3. We Are Still Called to Live Holy Lives
Though we are saved by grace, we are still called to live holy, obedient lives. 1 Peter 1:15–16 says:“But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.”
Our obedience is a reflection of our salvation, not the cause of it. When we live righteously, we show the world that we belong to God.
4. Living Before the Lord
The phrase “before the Lord” reminds us to live in awareness of God’s presence. We should ask ourselves each day: Am I living in a way that honors God? Would He be pleased with my thoughts, words, and actions?
This mindset helps us make wise choices and stay faithful. It brings a sense of accountability and reverence.
5. Teaching the Next Generation
Deuteronomy 6 repeatedly emphasizes teaching children and future generations. We must pass on God’s truth—not only through words but also through example.
When children see adults living in obedience and walking in righteousness, they learn what it means to love and follow God.

Obedience and righteousness are not just religious acts; they reflect the character of God. God is holy, just, and good. When we obey His commands, we mirror who He is.
