The Book of Deuteronomy
The word “Deuteronomy” means “second law.” It is the fifth book of the Bible and is part of the Torah, or the Law of Moses. The book is written by Moses and contains his final messages to the people of Israel before they enter the Promised Land.
Deuteronomy is a reminder of God’s laws and a call to obedience. The Israelites were about to settle in a land filled with other nations. Moses knew that they would face temptations, so he warned them not to forget God.
Chapter 6 Overview
Chapter 6 is one of the most well-known chapters in Deuteronomy. It begins with a call to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, and might. This chapter contains the famous Jewish prayer known as the Shema (Deuteronomy 6:4-5).
Moses tells the people to teach God’s commandments to their children, to speak about them daily, and to keep them close to their hearts. He reminds them that obedience to God will bring blessings, and disobedience will bring consequences.
From verses 20 to 25, Moses instructs parents to explain to their children why they follow God’s laws. This is the setting for Deuteronomy 6:24.

Deuteronomy 6:24 Meaning
“And the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes”
God gave Israel commandments, laws, and rules to follow. These were not random or meaningless rules. They came directly from the Lord. He is the Lawgiver. He is holy and perfect, and His commandments reflect His nature.
The phrase “all these statutes” shows that God expects full obedience, not just picking and choosing. Every law had a purpose—to teach, protect, and bless the people.
“To fear the Lord our God”
The word “fear” here does not mean to be scared. It means to respect, honor, and reverence God. To fear the Lord is to recognize who He is—our Creator, Redeemer, and King.
Fearing God means putting Him first in every area of life. It means taking His Word seriously. When we fear the Lord, we obey Him not out of fear of punishment but out of love and respect.
The Bible says:“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” — Proverbs 9:10 (KJV)
“For our good always”
This is one of the most powerful parts of the verse. God did not give us commandments to make life harder. He gave them for our good—to protect us, guide us, and bless us.
Just like a loving parent sets rules for a child’s safety, God sets rules for our benefit. His ways are better than ours. When we live by His Word, we find peace, joy, and purpose.
God is not trying to control us but to lead us to the best life possible.
“That he might preserve us alive”
Obedience leads to life. This was true for Israel in a physical sense—they would be safe and protected in the land. But it is also true for us today in a spiritual sense.
God’s commands lead to spiritual life. Disobedience leads to destruction. When we follow God’s way, He keeps us on the path that leads to eternal life.
The Bible says:“There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” — Proverbs 14:12 (KJV)
God’s commandments are a path to life, not death.
“As it is at this day”
This phrase shows that God’s protection and goodness were already being experienced. The people had survived the wilderness, received manna, and were standing on the edge of the Promised Land.
God had been faithful. He had kept them alive through danger, hunger, and battle. Moses reminds them that this was all because they followed God’s guidance.
The same is true today. When we obey God’s Word, we see His blessings “as it is at this day.”
Deuteronomy 6:24 Application in Life
1. God’s Laws Are for Our Good
Many people see God’s laws as restrictions. But in reality, they are gifts. God knows what is best for us. His laws protect us from harm and lead us toward peace and joy.
For example:
- God says not to steal, so we live in a society with trust.
- God says not to lie, so we have honesty in relationships.
- God says to forgive, so we don’t carry bitterness.
God’s laws bring freedom, not bondage. They help us live healthy, happy lives in harmony with others and with God.
2. Fearing God Brings Wisdom and Safety
To fear God is to take Him seriously. It means we care about His opinion more than the world’s opinion. This kind of fear leads to right living.
When we fear God:
- We avoid sin
- We make wise choices
- We develop strong character
- We live in God’s protection
Psalm 34:9 says:“O fear the Lord, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him.”
3. Obedience Is a Sign of Love
God doesn’t want empty religion. He wants a relationship. Jesus said:“If ye love me, keep my commandments.” — John 14:15 (KJV)
When we obey God, we show Him that we love and trust Him. Obedience is not about earning salvation—it is about responding to God’s grace with gratitude.
It is a way of saying: “Lord, I believe You know what’s best for me.”
4. God Preserves Those Who Walk in His Ways
When we live by God’s Word, we experience His protection. That doesn’t mean life will be perfect or free of trouble. But it does mean God will be with us in every situation.
Just as He preserved Israel in the wilderness, He will preserve us through every trial, temptation, and storm.
Psalm 121:7-8 says:“The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.”
5. Teach the Next Generation
In Deuteronomy 6, Moses tells parents to teach these truths to their children. Verse 24 is part of that message.
It’s not enough to know God’s commandments. We must pass them on to our families.
In today’s world, children are surrounded by voices that lead them away from God. We must be faithful to teach them God’s truth and show them, by example, how to live it out.
