Who Was the Father of Sarah in the Bible?

by Amelia Wilson

The Bible is full of stories that tell us about the lives of men and women who followed God. One of the most well-known women in the Bible is Sarah. She was the wife of Abraham and the mother of Isaac. But many people wonder, who was Sarah’s father?

The Early Life of Sarah

Sarah’s story begins in the book of Genesis. Her name was first mentioned as Sarai. Later, God changed her name to Sarah, which means “princess.” She lived in a place called Ur, which was in the land of the Chaldeans. This area is in modern-day Iraq.

Sarah’s Family Background

In Genesis 11:29, we read that Sarai was the wife of Abram (who was later called Abraham). The same verse also tells us about her family. It says that Abram and Nahor took wives. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai. But who were her parents?

Genesis 11:27–29

This passage gives us more details:

“Now these are the generations of Terah: Terah begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begat Lot. And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees. And Abram and Nahor took them wives: the name of Abram’s wife was Sarai…”

From this, we know that Sarai became a part of the family of Terah. But was she also his daughter?

Was Terah the Father of Sarah?

This is where the Bible gives us a clue that may not be obvious at first. In Genesis 20:12, Abraham says something important about Sarah:

“And yet indeed she is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.”

This means that Sarah was Abraham’s half-sister. They had the same father, but not the same mother. So according to this verse, Terah was also Sarah’s father.

Understanding Family Relationships in the Bible

In ancient times, it was not unusual for people to marry relatives. This happened often before the Law of Moses was given. The laws that came later in the Old Testament told the people of Israel not to marry close relatives. But before that time, such marriages were more accepted. Abraham and Sarah lived long before the Law was given.

So if Terah was both the father of Abraham and Sarah, then they were half-brother and half-sister. This helps us understand why Abraham said what he did to King Abimelech in Genesis 20.

Who Was Terah?

Now that we know Terah was Sarah’s father, let’s learn more about him. Terah was the father of three sons: Abram (Abraham), Nahor, and Haran. He lived in Ur of the Chaldeans. According to Genesis 11:31, Terah took his family and left Ur. He started the journey to the land of Canaan, but they stopped and settled in a place called Haran.

“And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son’s son, and Sarai his daughter in law… and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there.”

This tells us that Terah was the leader of his family and that Sarah (Sarai) was part of that household.

The Significance of Sarah’s Heritage

Knowing that Terah was Sarah’s father helps us understand more about her background. She came from a family that had a role in God’s plan. Terah’s family line would become very important in the story of the Bible. Through Abraham and Sarah, God would bring Isaac, and later the whole nation of Israel. Eventually, Jesus would be born from that same family line.

Why Did Abraham Call Sarah His Sister?

Some people wonder why Abraham told others that Sarah was his sister. He did this in Egypt (Genesis 12) and again in Gerar (Genesis 20). He was afraid that people might kill him to take Sarah because she was beautiful. So he said she was his sister. Since Sarah was his half-sister, what he said was not completely false. But it was still misleading.

This shows us that even great people in the Bible made mistakes. Abraham trusted God, but he also had moments of fear. God still protected him and Sarah, even when they did not always do the right thing.

Other Theories About Sarah’s Parentage

Some scholars have wondered if Sarah might have been the daughter of another family member, like Nahor or Haran. But the clearest verse is Genesis 20:12, where Abraham says she is the daughter of his father. Because of that verse, the traditional and most widely accepted view is that Terah was her father.

Sarah’s Importance in the Bible

Sarah is more than just Abraham’s wife or Terah’s daughter. She is a key figure in the Bible. In the New Testament, she is mentioned in Hebrews 11 as a woman of faith. She believed God’s promise that she would have a child, even when she was very old. Isaac was born when she was ninety years old!

“Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.” (Hebrews 11:11)

Sarah is also an example used by the Apostle Peter in 1 Peter 3. He encourages women to follow her example of respect and faithfulness.

The Name Change: Sarai to Sarah

In Genesis 17:15, God told Abraham to stop calling her Sarai. Her new name would be Sarah, which means “princess.” This name change showed that God had a special plan for her. She would become the mother of nations, and kings would come from her line.

“And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be.”

This was a promise from God, and He kept it.

Sarah’s Death and Burial

Sarah lived a long life. She died at the age of 127 years. She is the only woman in the Bible whose age at death is recorded. This shows how important she was. Abraham bought a cave called Machpelah to bury her. This place later became the family burial site for Abraham and his descendants.

“And Sarah was an hundred and seven and twenty years old: these were the years of the life of Sarah.” (Genesis 23:1)

Lessons from Sarah’s Life

Sarah’s life teaches us many lessons:

  • God keeps His promises, even when they seem impossible.
  • Faith and patience are important in our walk with God.
  • God can use ordinary people to do great things.
  • Our family background can be a part of God’s bigger plan.

Conclusion

So, who was the father of Sarah in the Bible? According to Genesis 20:12, her father was Terah, the same man who was the father of Abraham. This means Sarah and Abraham were half-siblings. While this may seem unusual today, it was not uncommon at that time. Sarah played a key role in the story of faith, family, and God’s plan for His people. Her life reminds us that God chooses people for His purpose, no matter their past or their family tree.

Understanding Sarah’s heritage helps us see how God worked through one family to bless the entire world. Through Abraham and Sarah came the nation of Israel and, later, Jesus Christ. Their story is a powerful reminder of God’s faithfulness and grace.
