Understanding the Book of Deuteronomy
The book of Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Bible. It is part of what is called the Pentateuch, or the Torah—the five books written by Moses under the inspiration of God.
Deuteronomy records Moses’ final speeches to the people of Israel before they entered the Promised Land. In these speeches, Moses repeated many of the laws God had already given. He reminded the Israelites how they should live as God’s chosen people.
The word “Deuteronomy” means “second law.” It doesn’t mean that God gave a new law, but rather that Moses was restating the law to a new generation. Many of the Israelites who had originally received the law at Mount Sinai had died in the wilderness. Now, their children were about to cross into the land God had promised.
Deuteronomy Chapter 16
Deuteronomy chapter 16 focuses mostly on three major feasts the Israelites were to celebrate:
- The Feast of Unleavened Bread
- The Feast of Weeks
- The Feast of Tabernacles
These feasts were reminders of God’s work in Israel’s history. The chapter also talks about justice—especially in verses 18 to 20. After discussing how the Israelites should worship, Moses turns to how they should govern.
God wanted His people not only to worship Him with sacrifices but also to live just and righteous lives. For this reason, He gave them instructions about appointing fair judges and leaders.

This verse uses older English, so let’s break it down and understand each part.
Deuteronomy 16:19 Meaning
“Thou shalt not wrest judgment…”
The word wrest in this verse means to twist or distort. When Moses says “Thou shalt not wrest judgment,” he means that judges and leaders must not change the law or twist justice to fit their own desires or opinions.
Justice should be based on truth, not on personal bias. Judges are to make fair decisions according to God’s law, not according to what benefits them or others.
This is a strong warning. God is a God of justice. When human leaders twist justice, they oppose God’s character.
“…thou shalt not respect persons…”
This phrase means that judges should not show favoritism. To “respect persons” is an old way of saying that you treat people differently based on their position, wealth, or power.
In today’s words, we might say: “Don’t be partial.” Don’t give special treatment to someone just because they are rich, important, or well-known.
God wanted judges to treat the poor and the rich the same. He wanted them to treat the stranger and the citizen the same. No one was to get special treatment in court.
This idea shows up again in the New Testament. In James 2:9, it says, “But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.”
God does not play favorites. He is impartial, and His people are called to be the same.
“…neither take a gift…”
This part is very clear. Judges should not take bribes. A bribe is money or a gift given in secret to influence someone’s decision. When someone gives a bribe, they want the judge to rule in their favor—whether they are right or wrong.
God commands judges not to accept these gifts. Why?
“…for a gift doth blind the eyes of the wise, and pervert the words of the righteous.”
Even a wise and honest person can be affected by a gift. Bribes cloud the mind. They make it hard for someone to think clearly. They cause confusion between right and wrong.
A judge might think, “It’s just a small gift,” but that gift can slowly change how he sees people and decisions.
The verse also says that gifts pervert the words of the righteous. That means they twist what is said. A good person may begin to speak lies instead of truth. They may change their words to protect the one who gave them a gift.
This is why God strongly warns against this kind of behavior. Justice must be pure. It must be based on truth—not money, power, or gifts.
Deuteronomy 16:19 Application in Life
1. God Cares Deeply About Justice
This verse reminds us that justice is important to God. He wants leaders to be fair, honest, and righteous.
As Christians, we should also care about justice. We should not only pray for the right outcomes but also work to make sure that people are treated fairly.
Whether we are parents, teachers, employers, or public officials, we should aim to judge fairly in every situation. We must resist the temptation to show favoritism or act out of self-interest.
2. Avoid Twisting the Truth
We may not be judges in a courtroom, but we still make decisions that affect others. Sometimes we might be tempted to change the truth to protect ourselves or someone else.
This verse teaches us not to twist judgment. Whether at home, school, or work, we must speak truthfully and act fairly. Even small lies or small acts of favoritism can grow into serious problems.
Being honest in all we do honors God and builds trust with others.
3. Be Careful With Gifts and Motives
Sometimes people give gifts with good intentions. But other times, gifts can be used to manipulate or gain influence.
We must be wise and cautious. A gift that changes how we treat someone or how we make decisions is not good. In some workplaces, this is called a conflict of interest.
We should also check our own hearts. Are we giving something to someone to win their favor? Or are we being honest and generous with no hidden motive?
4. Don’t Show Favoritism
Favoritism can hurt relationships, destroy trust, and lead to injustice. Whether in families, churches, or communities, we must strive to treat people equally.
Parents should not favor one child over another. Church leaders should not favor rich members over poor ones. Employers should not favor popular workers over quiet ones.
God sees everyone the same. He made us all in His image. We should learn to love, respect, and treat others fairly, just like He does.
5. Pray for and Support Honest Leaders
We live in a world where corruption is common. Many leaders twist justice or accept bribes. As Christians, we are called to pray for our leaders (1 Timothy 2:1–2).
We should also support leaders who are honest and fair. This might mean voting wisely, speaking up against injustice, or encouraging those who do the right thing.
Good leadership brings peace and blessing. Corrupt leadership brings pain and destruction. Our voice and prayers matter.

Deuteronomy 16:19 is a powerful verse about justice, honesty, and integrity. God’s people are called to be different from the world. In a world full of corruption, we are to be lights of truth and fairness. We may not wear robes or sit in courtrooms, but we all make judgments in daily life.
