One verse that clearly teaches this is Deuteronomy 15:8. This verse gives instructions about helping poor people. It is part of God’s laws to the Israelites. Though written many years ago, it still teaches powerful lessons today.

To understand any verse in the Bible, we must look at the context. That means we need to see what the verses around it are saying. Deuteronomy 15 is part of God’s law given to the Israelites through Moses.
The Setting of Deuteronomy
Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Bible. It is a book of speeches from Moses to the Israelites before they entered the Promised Land. It reviews God’s commandments and reminds the people how to live in covenant with Him.
Deuteronomy 15 focuses on the “Sabbath year” or “Year of Release.” Every seven years, God commanded the Israelites to cancel debts and release Hebrew slaves. This was a system of mercy and compassion.
The Focus of Chapter 15
Chapter 15 begins by telling the Israelites that every seventh year, they must forgive the debts of their fellow Israelites. Then it goes on to speak about poverty. Although God desired that no one among them should be poor (Deuteronomy 15:4), He also knew that poverty would still exist (Deuteronomy 15:11).
So, He gave clear instructions on how to treat the poor. Verse 7 says not to harden your heart or shut your hand against a poor brother. Then comes verse 8, which tells us what to do instead.

“But thou shalt open thine hand wide unto him, and shalt surely lend him sufficient for his need, in that which he wanteth.”
This verse is a command. It gives a positive instruction after the warning in verse 7.

“But thou shalt open thine hand wide unto him” – This means you should be generous and willing to help.
“And shalt surely lend him” – You are to give him what he needs.
“Sufficient for his need” – You don’t have to give everything you have, but you must give enough to truly help.
“In that which he wanteth” – This means giving according to his need, not what we think is enough, but what truly helps him.

Deuteronomy 15:8 Meaning
Now let’s explore what this verse means in depth. It is more than just a command to give. It shows the heart of God and how He wants His people to act.
1. A Call to Open-Hearted Generosity
The phrase “open thine hand wide” is a strong image. A closed hand holds onto things. An open hand gives freely. God is not just asking for a small gift. He is calling for generosity that comes from the heart.
This kind of giving reflects God’s nature. God is generous with us. He gives us life, breath, and every blessing. When we open our hands to others, we reflect Him.
2. Lending Without Hesitation
In the context of the seventh year, lending was a risk. If someone asked for help during the sixth year, there was a chance the debt would be canceled soon. The person giving the loan might never get the money back. But God says to give anyway.
This teaches us to give not because of what we will get in return, but because it is the right thing to do. God values mercy over profit.
3. Meeting Real Needs
The verse says to give “sufficient for his need.” That means we should care enough to understand the other person’s situation. What do they actually need? Maybe it’s food, clothes, a place to stay, or help finding work. Our help should be practical and thoughtful.
This shows that generosity is not just about money. It’s about truly helping someone in a way that meets their needs.
4. Trusting God as the Provider
Helping others can be hard if we feel we don’t have enough ourselves. But God promised to bless His people if they obeyed Him. In Deuteronomy 15:10, God says that if they give, He will bless them in all their work.
This verse calls us to trust God. When we help others, He will help us. He sees our actions, and He is faithful to provide for our needs too.
Deuteronomy 15:8 Application in Life
God’s Word is not just for reading. It is meant to shape how we live. Deuteronomy 15:8 has many powerful lessons for us today. Even though we do not live under the Old Testament law, the heart of God remains the same.
1. Be Generous with What You Have
We all have something we can give. Maybe it’s money, maybe it’s time, maybe it’s a listening ear. Whatever we have, we should be willing to share it with others who are in need.
Hebrews 13:16 says, “But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.”
Generosity pleases God. It shows that we care more about people than possessions.
2. Don’t Let Fear Stop You from Helping
Sometimes we hesitate to help because we’re afraid. We fear not having enough for ourselves. We worry about being taken advantage of. But fear should not stop us from doing what is right.
God told the Israelites to give even if the seventh year was near. He reminded them that He would bless them.
2 Corinthians 9:6–8 reminds us that “God loves a cheerful giver” and “God is able to make all grace abound toward you.”
When we give, God takes care of us.
3. Give According to the Need
Helping others means taking the time to understand them. Don’t just give what is easy. Ask: “What does this person truly need?” Maybe they need a meal today, but a job tomorrow. Maybe they need help paying rent or getting medical care.
James 2:15–16 warns us not to say “be warmed and filled” and then do nothing. Real faith is shown by real action.
4. Be Willing to Lend Without Expecting Return
Jesus echoed this same idea in Luke 6:34–35. He said, “If ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again.”
Giving without expecting something back is a mark of Christian love. It shows that we are not driven by selfishness, but by grace.
5. Teach Others to Be Generous Too
This verse is also a call to teach others. Parents should teach their children the importance of giving. Churches should teach their members how to care for the poor. Society should learn that true wealth is not in what we keep, but in what we give.
Acts 20:35 reminds us of Jesus’ words: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
Generosity spreads when it is taught and lived out.
6. See the Poor as Your Brother or Sister
In Deuteronomy 15, the poor person is called “thy brother.” That’s important. God didn’t want His people to see the poor as outsiders. They were family.
In the body of Christ, we are all one family. Galatians 6:10 says, “As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.”
When we see others as family, we are more likely to help them with love and compassion.
