The people of Israel had spent 40 years wandering in the wilderness. They were about to begin a new chapter. But before they crossed the Jordan River, God wanted to remind them of His laws, His promises, and their identity.

Deuteronomy 14:2 Meaning
1. “For thou art an holy people unto the Lord thy God”
The word “holy” means “set apart.” It does not just mean “good” or “morally pure.” It means being separated from the ordinary and dedicated to something special.
In this case, the people of Israel were set apart unto the Lord their God. They were not like the nations around them. God had rescued them from Egypt and made a covenant with them. He gave them His Law and called them His own.
This holiness affected every part of their lives—how they dressed, what they ate, how they treated others, and how they worshiped. Every detail reminded them that they belonged to a holy God.
Key truth: God’s people are not called to fit in with the world. They are called to stand out as holy.
2. “And the Lord hath chosen thee”
This line speaks of divine election. God chose Israel—not because they were numerous or strong—but because He loved them and had made a promise to Abraham (Deuteronomy 7:7-8).
This choosing was not about privilege for its own sake. It came with responsibility. Israel was to reflect God’s character to the world. They were to be a light to the Gentiles and a witness to His glory.

3. “To be a peculiar people unto himself”
The word “peculiar” in the King James Version means “special” or “treasured.” It does not mean “strange” as we often use it today. In Hebrew, the word used is segullah, which means “treasured possession” or “special treasure.”
God is saying that Israel is His own special treasure—dearly loved, highly valued, and uniquely His. He delights in them and calls them His own.
This reminds us of Exodus 19:5, where God says:
“Ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine.”
Key truth: God treasures His people and wants them to know how valuable they are to Him.
4. “Above all the nations that are upon the earth”
This does not mean Israel was better than other nations in worth. It means they had a unique role and responsibility. God gave them the Law, the prophets, the temple, and ultimately, through them came the Messiah—Jesus Christ.
Being “above all nations” speaks of calling, not pride. It was a high honor, but also a high duty. Israel was meant to be an example, not to boast but to bless.

Deuteronomy 14:2 Application in Life
Though this verse was spoken to Israel, its truth still applies to believers today. As Christians, we are also called to be holy, chosen, and treasured. The New Testament uses similar language when describing the Church.

1 Peter 2:9 says:
“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people…”
God calls Christians to be set apart from sin. This doesn’t mean we isolate ourselves from the world, but we live differently within it. Our values, speech, and actions should reflect Jesus.
Application: Ask yourself—do I live in a way that shows I am set apart for God? Am I holy in my thoughts, speech, and relationships?
2. You Are Chosen by God
Being chosen by God is not something we earn. It is a gift of grace. Ephesians 1:4 tells us that God “chose us in him before the foundation of the world.”
When you know you are chosen by God, it gives you purpose and confidence. You are not here by accident. You are here for His glory.
Application: When you feel discouraged or unwanted, remember—you are chosen by the King of Kings.
3. You Are God’s Special Treasure
God delights in His people. He loves them deeply. He sent His Son to die for them. That is how valuable you are.
Jesus said in Matthew 13:44:
“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field…”
God considers you a treasure. This truth should give you strength to live boldly for Him.
Application: Don’t let the world define your worth. God says you are His treasure. Live like you believe that.
4. You Are Called to Be Different
Israel was called to live differently than the pagan nations. As Christians, we are also called to be different from the culture around us.
Romans 12:2 says:
“Be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed…”
That means we don’t follow sinful trends or worldly thinking. We follow Jesus. We love differently. We speak truth. We serve humbly.
Application: In your daily life—at work, at school, online—ask: Am I reflecting God’s values or the world’s?
5. You Have a Mission
Israel was chosen to be a light to the nations. Likewise, Jesus tells His followers:
“Ye are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14).
Your life is a testimony. When people see you, they should see Jesus.
Application: Let your actions, words, and love point others to God.
