The word “Deuteronomy” means “second law.” It is not a new law, but a restating of the law given earlier in Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers. Moses reminds the people to love, obey, and fear the Lord.
Worship in the Land
In Deuteronomy chapter 12, Moses speaks about the way God’s people should worship Him once they settle in Canaan. The Canaanites worshiped many false gods at many different high places. God wanted the Israelites to be different.
God did not want His people to worship Him however they liked. He gave specific instructions. Deuteronomy 12 is all about pure, proper, and central worship. Instead of many locations, there would be one place chosen by God.
Leading Up to Verse 5
In verses 1–4, God commands His people to destroy all the false altars, idols, and sacred trees of the Canaanites. Then, in verse 5, He shifts the focus. Now, He tells them where and how they should worship Him.

This part of the verse shows that God chooses the place of worship, not man. The Israelites were not free to pick any location that felt holy or meaningful to them. God alone decides where He wants His name to dwell.
This reminds us that worship is not based on feelings but on obedience.
In Israel’s history, this place was eventually revealed to be Jerusalem. There, the temple would be built, and the presence of God would rest.
But at the time of Moses, that location had not yet been revealed. So, the people were told to wait for God’s instruction.
“…out of all your tribes…”
God would choose this special place from among the twelve tribes of Israel. All the tribes were equal in God’s sight, but He would select one location that would serve all the tribes as a center of worship.
This shows God’s unity and order. He wanted one nation, under one God, worshiping in one place.
Eventually, the place God chose was Jerusalem, in the territory of Judah, from which Jesus Himself would later come.
“…to put his name there…”
This is a beautiful phrase. To “put His name” in a place means that God would dwell there in a special way. It would be the habitation of His presence. His name speaks of His character, His glory, and His authority.
In the ancient world, placing your name somewhere showed ownership and relationship. By putting His name in the chosen place, God claimed it as His holy dwelling.
This was not just a religious site—it was a sacred space, marked by the presence of the living God.
“…even unto his habitation shall ye seek…”
The word “habitation” means a dwelling place. God was saying, “This is where I will live among you.” He wanted His people to seek Him there—to go to that chosen place with humble hearts, offering worship and sacrifices.
Worship was not to be random or shallow. It was to be focused, intentional, and centered on God’s chosen place.
To “seek” means to desire, to search, and to come with purpose. God wanted His people to draw near to Him with love and reverence.
“…and thither thou shalt come.”
Finally, the people were told to go to that place. They were not to stay in their towns and make their own worship sites. They had to travel to God’s chosen place.
This would later become the center of their religious life. Feasts, sacrifices, and special offerings were all to be brought to this one location.
This verse set the foundation for a worship life that was unified, holy, and obedient.
Deuteronomy 12:5 Application in Life
Even though we no longer worship in a physical temple like the Israelites did, this verse still holds deep spiritual truth for believers today. Let’s look at some key applications.
1. Worship Must Be God-Centered
Deuteronomy 12:5 reminds us that God defines how He wants to be worshiped. Worship is not about our preferences. It’s about honoring God in the way He commands.
Today, we are not under the old covenant. But God still seeks true worshipers who worship Him in spirit and truth (John 4:24). We must ask ourselves:
- Is my worship based on God’s Word?
- Am I worshiping to please Him, or just myself?
- Do I seek God’s presence or just a good feeling?
We must remember that worship is holy. It is for God’s glory, not entertainment or tradition.
2. God Chooses Where He Dwells
In the Old Testament, God chose a physical place. In the New Testament, God chooses people. He now dwells in the hearts of His people.
1 Corinthians 6:19 says, “Your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost.” Today, God puts His name on believers. He calls us His children. We are His habitation.
This truth should change how we live. If God dwells in us, then:
- We must live in holiness
- We must keep our hearts clean
- We must seek Him daily
We are His chosen place now. We carry His presence wherever we go.
3. Seek the Lord Diligently
Deuteronomy 12:5 says, “unto his habitation shall ye seek.” God calls His people to pursue Him. We are not to be passive. We are to hunger and thirst for His presence.
Jeremiah 29:13 says, “Ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.” God promises to reveal Himself to those who seek Him sincerely.
In our busy world, we must make time to:

- Read the Word
- Worship
- Reflect
- Rest in Him
Seeking God brings peace, joy, and strength.
4. Come to God with Obedience
God told Israel, “Thither thou shalt come.” He wanted them to come to Him, not just in spirit but in action. They were to obey Him and bring their sacrifices to His chosen place.
Today, Jesus is our High Priest. We do not bring animal sacrifices, but we are still called to come to God. Hebrews 10:22 says, “Let us draw near with a true heart.”
We are to come:
- In faith
- With humility
- With praise
- With confession
- With obedience
Worship is not just a song—it is a life laid down before God.
5. Jesus Is Now the Center of Worship
Ultimately, Deuteronomy 12:5 points us to Jesus Christ. He is the true place where God’s name dwells. He is the one in whom the fullness of God lives (Colossians 2:9).
Jesus said in John 2:19, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” He was speaking of His body. He is the new temple.
Today, we don’t go to Jerusalem to worship. We come to Jesus. He is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6).
Worship is no longer tied to a location—it is tied to a person. Jesus is our temple, our altar, our sacrifice, and our High Priest.
