The Book of Deuteronomy
The word “Deuteronomy” means “second law.” The book is a retelling of the Law given to the Israelites. Moses speaks to the people just before they enter the Promised Land. The book is both a history lesson and a call to obedience.
At this point, Moses is very old. He knows he will not enter the Promised Land with the people. So he gives them instructions to help them stay faithful to God. He reminds them of the covenant they made with God at Mount Sinai. He also warns them of the dangers of turning away from God.
Chapter 10 Overview
Deuteronomy 10 is a chapter where Moses speaks about the mercy of God. In the earlier chapters, he reminded the people of their disobedience, especially the incident of the golden calf. Yet, despite their sin, God forgave them.
In this chapter, Moses describes how God gave the Ten Commandments again. God called Moses to make new stone tablets and an ark to keep them in. Then God gave the Law again as a sign of His mercy and continued covenant.
Moses then urges the people to respond to God’s kindness. He tells them to fear God, walk in His ways, love Him, and serve Him with all their heart and soul (Deuteronomy 10:12). He reminds them that God is the Lord of all and shows no partiality. He loves the fatherless and the widow, and He cares for the stranger.
This leads us to verse 20, where Moses gives a clear instruction to the people on how they should relate to God.

Deuteronomy 10:20 Meaning
“Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God”
To “fear” the Lord means to have deep respect and reverence for Him. It does not mean being scared in a negative way. Rather, it means honoring God for who He is—holy, mighty, and just.
In the Bible, the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10). It is the kind of fear that makes a person want to obey God and avoid sin. It involves recognizing His authority and power.
For the Israelites, fearing God meant remembering how He rescued them from Egypt. It also meant understanding that He would judge them if they turned away. Moses reminded them that God is not to be taken lightly. He is loving, but also just.
“Him shalt thou serve”
To serve God means to live for Him and obey His commands. Service is more than just action; it includes the heart and attitude. The Israelites were to serve God in everything—how they treated others, how they worshipped, and how they lived day by day.
In the New Testament, Jesus echoes this truth when He says, “You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve” (Matthew 4:10).
Service to God includes prayer, worship, obedience, and love. It also involves serving others as part of loving God.
“And to him shalt thou cleave”
To cleave to God means to stick closely to Him. It is the same word used in Genesis 2:24 about a husband and wife becoming one flesh. It speaks of a deep, personal relationship.
Moses is telling the people to be loyal to God with their whole hearts. They should not chase after other gods or follow the nations around them. They are to remain faithful, even when it is difficult.
Cleaving to God also means trusting Him in hard times. When enemies come, or when they feel alone, they must stay close to the Lord. This kind of faithfulness brings blessing and peace.
“And swear by his name”
Swearing by God’s name means making promises or taking oaths in His name. In ancient Israel, this was a way of showing loyalty and truthfulness. When someone swore by God’s name, they were saying, “I am telling the truth, and God is my witness.”
This does not mean we should make careless oaths. In fact, Jesus warned against swearing in vain (Matthew 5:33-37). But in this context, swearing by God’s name was an act of devotion. It showed that they trusted in God above all others.
To swear by God’s name was also a public act. It meant that the people would identify themselves as followers of the Lord. They were not to swear by other gods or trust in idols.
Deuteronomy 10:20 Application in Life
This verse is not only for the Israelites. It is also for us today. The principles found in Deuteronomy 10:20 are still true and relevant.
1. Fear the Lord in Daily Life
To fear God today means to honor Him in everything. It means we should live with an awareness that God is always watching. We should seek to please Him, not people.
Fearing the Lord affects how we speak, how we act, and how we treat others. It makes us careful with our decisions. It also brings us peace, knowing that God is in control.
2. Serve God Faithfully
We are called to serve God with our whole lives. This does not only mean serving in church, but also being faithful at work, at home, and in our communities. Every act of kindness and obedience is service to God.
Jesus taught His followers to be servants. He washed His disciples’ feet and told them to do the same. We serve God by loving others and putting them before ourselves.
3. Cleave to God in Trials
Life is full of challenges. Sometimes it is easy to doubt or walk away from faith. But the Bible tells us to hold tightly to God.
We cleave to God by reading His Word, praying, worshipping, and staying in fellowship with other believers. When times get hard, we should run to God, not away from Him.
This deep connection with God gives us strength. It reminds us that we are never alone.
4. Identify with God Publicly
Swearing by God’s name also means not being ashamed to be known as His follower. In today’s world, many people hide their faith. But God wants us to speak His name with honor.
This includes speaking the truth, standing for what is right, and giving glory to God in our successes. It also means not turning to other sources for hope or identity.
As Christians, our trust is in God alone. Our loyalty should be seen in the way we live and speak.
