The Book of Deuteronomy
Deuteronomy is the fifth book in the Bible and the last book of the Torah (or the Law). Moses is the speaker. He is addressing the people of Israel just before they enter the Promised Land. It is a speech that includes reminders, warnings, and encouragements.
Deuteronomy means “second law.” But it is not a new law. Instead, Moses is reminding the people of what God has already said. He is repeating the laws and commandments that were given earlier, especially in Exodus and Leviticus.
Israel’s Journey So Far
By the time of Deuteronomy, Israel had already been in the wilderness for forty years. They were at the border of the land of Canaan, which God had promised them. The first generation who came out of Egypt had died because of their disobedience. Now, their children were ready to go in and take the land.
The land, however, was not empty. It was filled with strong nations, large cities, and people who were known for their strength and military power. The Israelites were small in number compared to these groups. It would be natural to feel fear.
Chapter 9 Overview
In Deuteronomy 9, Moses is warning the people not to become proud. He reminds them that they are not getting the land because they are righteous. Instead, they are receiving it because of God’s promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—and because of the wickedness of the nations currently living there.
Verses 1-3 are especially important. They talk about the strength of the nations Israel is about to face. But they also tell Israel to trust in the Lord who goes before them.

This verse is part of Moses’ description of the enemy nations. It refers to the Anakims, a people known for their great size and strength. The Israelites had heard of them before. They were famous for being unbeatable. But Moses uses this image not to cause fear—but to build trust in God.

The Anakims Were Powerful
The Anakims were giants. They were descendants of Anak and were known to be warriors. In the book of Numbers, when the twelve spies explored the land, ten of them returned with a fearful report about the Anakims.
“And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak… and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers.” — Numbers 13:33 (KJV)
This shows how intimidating these people were. They were strong, tall, and feared. Many Israelites were discouraged because of them.
Fear Was Common
The phrase “whom thou knowest, and of whom thou hast heard say…” points to the fact that these giants were well-known. Stories of their strength and size had spread. People often said things like “Who can stand before the children of Anak?” In other words, no one dared fight them.
Moses is reminding the people that even though they have heard how unbeatable these people are, God is still stronger.
Moses Confronts the Fear
Instead of agreeing with the fear, Moses challenges it. He reminds the people that God is going to go before them. In verse 3, he says:
“Understand therefore this day, that the Lord thy God is he which goeth over before thee; as a consuming fire he shall destroy them…” — Deuteronomy 9:3 (KJV)
This shows that the focus should not be on how big the Anakims are, but on how powerful God is.
Faith Over Fear
This verse is not just a history lesson. It’s a reminder to have faith in God’s strength. The Israelites were afraid before, and it kept them from entering the land the first time. Now Moses wants them to be strong in faith. They must not look at the size of the enemy but look at the size of their God.
Deuteronomy 9:2 Application in Life
1. We All Face “Giants” in Life
Today, we may not face the Anakims, but we face other “giants.” These can be problems, fears, challenges, or even people who seem stronger than us. Sometimes we feel small, just like the Israelites did.
These giants make us feel weak. They seem too big to beat. But just like the Israelites, we must remember that God is with us.
2. Don’t Be Intimidated by Reputation
The Anakims were known everywhere. People said they were unbeatable. But God had a different view. No matter what others say about your situation, God has the final word.
People may say:
- “That disease is terminal.”
- “Your finances will never recover.”
- “You’ll never get through this.”
But remember what God says:“With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.” — Matthew 19:26 (KJV)
3. God Goes Before You
One of the most powerful truths in Deuteronomy 9 is that God goes ahead of His people. He is not just behind us or beside us—He is before us.
When you face a challenge, know that God is already in your tomorrow. He is already preparing the way. Just as He promised to destroy the Anakims before the Israelites, He will also fight your battles.

4. Focus on God, Not the Problem
The Israelites were afraid because they focused on how big the giants were. But Moses wanted them to focus on how big God is. This is a lesson for us.
When we keep our eyes on our problems, we become discouraged. But when we fix our eyes on God, we find strength.

5. Remember What God Has Done Before
Moses reminded the Israelites of what God had already done. He brought them out of Egypt with mighty miracles. He split the Red Sea. He gave them manna from heaven and water from a rock.
In the same way, we must remember how God has helped us in the past. This builds our faith for the present.
Keep a journal of answered prayers. Remember His faithfulness. When you face new “giants,” remember the victories of the past.

6. Beware of Pride
Later in Deuteronomy 9, Moses warns Israel not to think they deserve the land. He says they are a stiff-necked people and often disobedient. This shows us that our blessings are not because of our goodness, but because of God’s grace.
When God helps you overcome, don’t become proud. Stay humble. Give Him all the glory.

7. Obedience Is Key
To enter the land and defeat their enemies, Israel had to obey God. Faith without obedience would not bring victory. We must also walk in God’s ways.
When we live in obedience, God blesses and protects us. Obedience opens the door to victory.

Deuteronomy 9:2 is more than a description of ancient warriors. It is a call to faith. It tells us not to be afraid of the giants we face. The Anakims were strong, but God was stronger. The Israelites were small, but God was mighty.
In the same way, whatever you’re facing today—know this: God is with you. He goes before you. He will fight for you. The world may say, “Who can stand before this?” But God says, “With Me, all things are possible.” So whatever “giant” stands in front of you, remember: God has already gone ahead. Victory is not about your strength, but His. Walk in faith, not fear.
