The Journey of Israel
The people of Israel had come out of Egypt by God’s mighty hand. He had led them through the wilderness for 40 years. During that time, they had received the Ten Commandments and learned how to live as God’s chosen people. Now they were about to cross into Canaan, the land God had promised to give their ancestors.
But Canaan was not empty. It was filled with strong nations that worshipped false gods. These nations had powerful armies, large cities, and cruel practices. Naturally, the Israelites were afraid.
Moses reminded them of all God had done in the past. He told them that they must not fear the people of the land because God would go before them and drive out their enemies.
The Whole Chapter of Deuteronomy 7
Deuteronomy 7 speaks of God’s command to the Israelites to separate themselves from the nations living in the Promised Land. God warns them not to intermarry with those who do not worship Him. He also commands them to destroy their idols and altars.
This was not because God hated other people. Rather, it was to protect the Israelites from turning away from the true God. If they mixed with idol worshippers, they would soon forget God’s laws and start doing evil.
Moses assures the people that they are special. God chose them not because they were great in number, but because He loved them and made a promise to their ancestors. Because of that love, God would fight for them.
That’s where verse 21 fits in. It is part of Moses’ encouragement to be strong and not give in to fear.

Deuteronomy 7:21 Meaning
This verse has a simple yet powerful message. Let’s break it down piece by piece to understand its deeper meaning.
“Thou shalt not be affrighted at them”
This means that the people of Israel should not be scared of their enemies. Even though these enemies may seem strong and powerful, they must not let fear control them.
Fear is a natural human response. But when God gives a command like this, He is also giving them a reason to overcome that fear. He is not saying that their enemies are weak. He is saying that God is stronger.
This is a reminder that fear often makes problems look bigger than they really are. But God calls His people to trust Him, not to be controlled by fear.
“For the Lord thy God is among you”
This part of the verse is the reason why they should not be afraid. God is not far away. He is among His people. His presence brings peace, protection, and power.
When God is with us, we are never alone. His presence changes everything. Throughout Scripture, God’s presence has always brought courage to His people.
For example, in Joshua 1:9, God says, “Be strong and of a good courage… for the Lord thy God is with thee.” In Psalm 23:4, David says, “I will fear no evil: for thou art with me.” The presence of God is a shield and a comfort.
“A mighty God and terrible”
The word “terrible” here doesn’t mean bad or evil. In older English, it means someone who inspires awe and fear because of their power. A “terrible” God is one who is strong, mighty, and holy—someone who cannot be ignored.
This part reminds the people that God is powerful beyond imagination. He is able to destroy armies, move mountains, and perform miracles. He had already shown His power by sending plagues on Egypt, parting the Red Sea, and feeding His people in the desert.
So, when Moses says that God is “a mighty God and terrible,” he is saying: “Don’t worry about how big your enemies are—your God is even bigger.”
Deuteronomy 7:21 Application in Life
This verse is not just a message for Israel long ago. It has deep meaning for us today. The enemies we face may not be armies or nations, but we all face battles—fear, doubt, illness, pain, grief, financial problems, broken relationships, and spiritual warfare.
1. Do Not Be Afraid of the Challenges Ahead
We often feel overwhelmed when we look at the future. The unknown can be scary. Like the Israelites, we may feel small and weak in front of big problems.
But God tells us, “Do not be afraid.” If we belong to Him, then He goes with us. We can trust Him to help us overcome every challenge. Fear is real, but God is greater.
We may not have control over our problems, but we can control where we put our trust. Psalm 56:3 says, “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.”
2. God Is Always With Us
One of the most comforting truths in the Bible is that God is with His people. This doesn’t mean life will be easy. But it means we never face trials alone.
Jesus promised in Matthew 28:20, “Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” That same promise was true in the Old Testament. God was among His people then, and He is among His people now.
When we remember that God is with us, we can find peace even in the middle of chaos.
3. God’s Power Is Greater Than Our Weakness
We don’t need to have all the answers. We don’t have to be strong enough on our own. God’s power is more than enough.
Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 12:9, “My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” When we admit our need and trust in God, His power works through us.
God’s might is not just something we read about in the Bible—it is active in our lives. He is still mighty and “terrible” in the best sense of the word.
4. God Fights for His People
One of the most repeated promises in the Bible is that God fights for His people. In Exodus 14:14, Moses tells the Israelites, “The Lord shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.”
When God is on our side, we don’t need to be afraid of any enemy. Whether it’s a spiritual attack, a health crisis, or a difficult decision, God stands ready to defend His people.
5. Trust in God’s Promises
Deuteronomy 7:21 is also a reminder to hold on to God’s promises. He had promised to give the land to Israel. He had promised to be with them. He had promised to protect them.
God has made promises to us as well. He promises to give us peace (John 14:27), to provide for our needs (Philippians 4:19), and to never leave us (Hebrews 13:5).
When we remember His promises, our faith grows and fear loses its power.
