Deuteronomy is a book of speeches. Moses speaks to the people of Israel. They are about to enter the Promised Land. Moses will not go with them. So he gives them final instructions. He reminds them of the laws of God.
The book repeats many laws already given in Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers. But here, the tone is more personal. Moses speaks from his heart. He urges Israel to obey God faithfully. He wants them to remember God’s love and power.
Israel’s Journey and God’s Covenant
At this point in Deuteronomy, Israel has come through a long journey. They were slaves in Egypt. God delivered them through mighty miracles. He parted the Red Sea. He gave them manna in the wilderness. He guided them with a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night.
Now they are at the edge of the land God promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Before they enter, God reminds them of His covenant. A covenant is a holy promise. God made a covenant with Israel. He would be their God. They would be His people. They must obey His laws.
Chapter 7 especially focuses on what Israel must do when they enter the land. God tells them not to mix with the people living there. These people worship false gods. God warns Israel not to be influenced by them.
Leading Up to Deuteronomy 7:11
In verses before Deuteronomy 7:11, God tells the people to destroy idols. He warns them not to make covenants with the pagan nations. He reminds them that they are a holy people. God chose them because He loved them, not because they were many or strong.

“Thou shalt therefore keep…”
The word “therefore” means “because of what I just said.” So this verse connects to the previous verses. God has just said that He loves Israel. He keeps His covenant. He blesses those who love Him.
Because of this, Israel should keep His commandments. They should obey because God is good. They should follow His laws because He is faithful.
This is not blind obedience. It is a response to love. God loved them first. Now they are to love Him back by obeying Him.
“…the commandments, and the statutes, and the judgments…”
These words all refer to God’s laws, but each has a slightly different meaning.
- Commandments are God’s clear rules. These include the Ten Commandments.
- Statutes are specific instructions. They can include ceremonial laws, like how to offer sacrifices.
- Judgments are God’s decisions about right and wrong. These help Israel live in justice and fairness.
God is saying: Keep all My instructions. Don’t just choose the easy ones. Don’t ignore the hard ones. Follow everything I have given you.
“…which I command thee this day…”
Moses is speaking on behalf of God. He is giving these commands as God’s mouthpiece. The phrase “this day” shows urgency. This is not something to think about later. God wants His people to obey today.
Obedience is not for tomorrow. It is not for a better time. It is for now.

The goal is action. It is not enough to know God’s laws. It is not enough to hear them. Israel must do them.
True obedience involves action. Faith must lead to works. Hearing God’s word should change our lives.
This reminds us of James 1:22 — “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”
Deuteronomy 7:11 Application in Life
Obedience Is a Response to God’s Love
Just like Israel, we are called to obey God because He loves us. We love Him because He first loved us (1 John 4:19). He sent His Son to die for our sins. He forgave us. He gave us eternal life.
Because of this, we should live in obedience. Not to earn salvation, but to show our love for God.
Jesus said in John 14:15 — “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
God’s Commands Are Good
Sometimes people think God’s laws are harsh or outdated. But that is not true. God’s commandments are for our good. They protect us. They help us live in peace and blessing.
Psalm 19:8 says — “The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart.”
When we follow God’s ways, we experience joy and safety. He knows what is best for us.
Daily Obedience Matters
Deuteronomy 7:11 says, “this day.” That means every day counts. Obedience is not just for Sundays. It is not only for special times. It is for daily life.
Each day, we must choose to walk with God. We must read His Word. We must pray. We must choose honesty, kindness, and love.
Obedience is a daily habit. It grows over time.
Obeying in All Areas of Life
God wants full obedience. Not partial. Not selective.
Sometimes people obey in some areas and ignore others. They may go to church but lie in business. They may sing songs of worship but treat others unkindly.
But God sees the heart. He wants obedience in every area — family, work, speech, money, relationships.
As Psalm 119:10 says — “With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.”
Teaching Obedience to Others
Just as Moses taught the people, we are to teach others — our children, our friends, new believers.
Deuteronomy 6:7 says — “And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children…”
We must pass on the truth. We must show others how to walk with God. Not only in words, but by our example.
Obedience and Blessing
In Deuteronomy 7, God promises blessings to those who obey. He says He will bless their families, their crops, and their land.
While we do not follow God only to receive blessings, we know that obedience brings reward. Maybe not always in riches or health, but in peace, joy, and God’s presence.
As Jesus said in Luke 11:28 — “Blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.”
Obedience in the New Testament
Some people think the Old Testament is about law, and the New Testament is about grace. But this is not true.
Grace and obedience go together. We are saved by grace, not by works. But once saved, we are called to live holy lives.
Romans 6:17 says — “But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart…”
Obedience is part of the Christian life. It shows that our hearts belong to God.
