What Does God Say About Mother’s Day?

by Jennifer

Mother’s Day is a widely celebrated occasion across many cultures, honoring the role of mothers in nurturing, teaching, and caring for their children and families. While the modern observance of Mother’s Day as a specific calendar event is a relatively recent development—formally recognized in the United States in the early 20th century—the concept of honoring mothers is deeply rooted in biblical principles. So, what does God say about Mother’s Day? Although the Bible does not mention “Mother’s Day” explicitly, it provides profound insights into the value and honor that mothers deserve. This article explores God’s perspective on motherhood, the significance of honoring mothers, and how biblical principles align with the heart of this special day.

Honoring Mothers: A Command from God

One of the most direct biblical foundations for honoring mothers is found in the Ten Commandments, which state:“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.” (Exodus 20:12, NIV)

This commandment is not just a moral suggestion—it is a divine directive. It’s one of the few commandments with a promise attached to it: long life and blessing. The idea of “honoring” extends beyond just obedience in childhood. It encompasses respect, appreciation, care, and recognition throughout life.

Mother’s Day, therefore, is a culturally accepted opportunity to fulfill a timeless biblical principle: giving mothers the honor and recognition they rightfully deserve.

Biblical Portraits of Motherhood

The Bible is rich with stories of mothers who played pivotal roles in God’s redemptive story. These examples not only highlight the importance of mothers but also provide divine affirmation of their unique role in shaping lives and faith.

1. Eve: The Mother of All Living

Eve is the first mother mentioned in the Bible. Despite her initial fall into sin, she is called the “mother of all living” (Genesis 3:20). Her name and role underscore the vital position of mothers in God’s creation and human continuity.

2. Sarah: A Miracle Mother

Sarah, Abraham’s wife, became a mother in her old age, after years of barrenness. Her story (Genesis 21) reminds us of God’s power and timing, and how motherhood is often wrapped in both trials and triumphs. Her faith and patience were instrumental in bringing forth the lineage through which the nation of Israel and ultimately the Messiah would come.

3. Hannah: A Mother Who Prayed

Hannah’s heartfelt prayer for a child and her vow to dedicate him to the Lord (1 Samuel 1) is a touching portrayal of a godly mother. Her son Samuel became a prophet and leader of Israel. Hannah’s story illustrates the power of prayer and the selflessness of maternal love.

4. Mary: The Mother of Jesus

Mary’s faith and humility in accepting God’s plan for her to bear Jesus, the Son of God, is among the most revered examples of motherhood in the Bible (Luke 1). Despite facing societal shame and immense responsibility, she embraced her role with grace, making her an enduring model of trust and devotion.

God’s View of a Mother’s Role

The Bible repeatedly affirms the value of a mother’s influence. Proverbs, in particular, is filled with wisdom regarding the nurturing role of mothers. “Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.” (Proverbs 1:8, NIV)

A mother’s teachings are to be cherished and not forgotten. This verse reflects the divine respect for the spiritual and moral guidance mothers provide.

Proverbs 31: A Tribute to Godly Mothers

Perhaps the most well-known passage about motherhood is Proverbs 31:10–31, which describes a virtuous woman—often interpreted as an ideal wife and mother. She is wise, hardworking, compassionate, and fears the Lord. Her children and husband praise her, showing that a mother’s work is not overlooked by God or by those she serves.

“Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.” (Proverbs 31:28, NIV)

This passage can be read as God’s endorsement of motherhood as a high calling, worthy of public acknowledgment and honor—similar to what we aim to do on Mother’s Day.

Jesus’ Love for His Mother

Even Jesus, in His final moments on the cross, demonstrated care and honor for His mother. In John 19:26-27, Jesus sees His mother and the disciple John standing nearby and says:“Woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.”

In doing so, Jesus ensured that His mother would be cared for after His death. This act shows the deep respect and love He had for her. It is a poignant reminder that honoring our mothers is a holy responsibility, not to be neglected even in our most difficult moments.

Celebrating Mother’s Day Through a Godly Lens

While Mother’s Day as celebrated today includes flowers, cards, and family dinners, Christians are encouraged to go deeper. A biblical Mother’s Day is more than sentiment—it is spiritual recognition of a divine role. Here are a few godly ways to honor mothers on this day:

1. Express Gratitude with Meaning

Go beyond surface-level thanks. Reflect on specific sacrifices your mother has made, the lessons she’s taught, and how she shaped your character and faith.

2. Pray for Mothers

Lift mothers up in prayer—for strength, wisdom, patience, and joy. Pray for single mothers, grieving mothers, mothers facing infertility, and spiritual mothers who care for others.

3. Serve Them with Joy

Acts of service—like cooking, cleaning, or spending quality time—speak volumes. Jesus modeled servanthood, and serving our mothers reflects His love in action.

4. Bless Them Publicly

Tell others about your appreciation for your mother. Write a post, share a tribute, or speak words of affirmation. Public praise was a biblical tradition (Proverbs 31:31), and it continues to be powerful today.

Motherhood: A Reflection of God’s Love

A mother’s love is often described as the closest human reflection of God’s unconditional love. Isaiah 66:13 says:“As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you.”

God uses the metaphor of a mother’s care to describe His own compassion, emphasizing the tender, nurturing aspect of divine love. This is no coincidence—it shows that motherhood was created by God as a sacred vessel to reveal His nature.

Honoring All Types of Mothers

It’s important to acknowledge that Mother’s Day can be bittersweet or painful for some. Women who have lost children, those struggling with infertility, or those who never had the opportunity to raise children still reflect God’s nurturing character. Spiritual mothers—mentors, teachers, aunts, and godmothers—also embody the spirit of motherhood. Scripture upholds the idea that godly influence and care are not limited to biological relationships.“Older women… are to teach what is good, and so train the young women…” (Titus 2:3-4, ESV)

This broadens the concept of honoring mothers to include all women who nurture, guide, and sacrifice for the sake of others.

Conclusion

While the Bible may not reference Mother’s Day directly, God’s Word abundantly affirms the importance, honor, and value of mothers. From the commandments to Jesus’ own actions, honoring one’s mother is not only culturally appropriate—it is biblically endorsed. God views mothers as vital to His plan for families, the church, and society. Therefore, celebrating Mother’s Day through a biblical lens means not only appreciating our mothers with gifts and gestures but embracing a heart posture of gratitude, service, and godly honor.

In doing so, we fulfill God’s command and reflect His character—a fitting tribute to the women who shape the world with love.
