What the Bible Says About Easter?

by Amelia Wilson

Easter is one of the most important celebrations in Christianity. It is a time when Christians remember the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This article will explain what the Bible says about Easter. It will use simple language so that everyone can understand. We will look at different parts of the Bible and learn what they tell us about this holy event.

The Meaning of Easter

Easter is not just about springtime, eggs, or bunnies. These are fun traditions, but they are not found in the Bible. Easter is about something much deeper. It is about Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who died on the cross and rose again from the dead. This event changed history forever.

In the Bible, the resurrection of Jesus is the foundation of Christian faith. Without it, Christianity would not exist. The Apostle Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15:14, “And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.”

The Death of Jesus

Before we can understand Easter, we need to understand why Jesus died. The Bible says that all people have sinned (Romans 3:23). Sin separates us from God. But God loves us so much that He sent His Son to take our punishment.

In John 3:16, we read: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Jesus was arrested, beaten, and crucified. This means He was nailed to a cross and left to die. He was innocent, but He chose to suffer for us. He died to pay for our sins.

The Burial of Jesus

After Jesus died, His body was taken down from the cross. A man named Joseph of Arimathea placed His body in a tomb. This was like a cave carved into a rock. A big stone was rolled in front of the entrance.

The Bible says in Matthew 27:59-60: “Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away.”

The Resurrection of Jesus

Three days after Jesus died, something amazing happened. Jesus came back to life. He rose from the dead. This is called the resurrection. It is the heart of Easter.

The Bible says in Matthew 28:5-6: “The angel said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said.'”

Many people saw Jesus after He rose. He talked with them and even ate with them. This proved that He was really alive.

Why the Resurrection Matters

The resurrection shows that Jesus is who He said He is—the Son of God. It also proves that His sacrifice for our sins was accepted by God. Because Jesus rose from the dead, we can have hope.

1 Peter 1:3 says: “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.”

Easter is a reminder that death is not the end. For those who believe in Jesus, there is eternal life.

Easter in the Old Testament

The word “Easter” does not appear in the Old Testament, but there are many stories and symbols that point to it. One of the most important is the story of the Passover.

The Passover was a time when God saved His people, the Israelites, from slavery in Egypt. They had to kill a lamb and put its blood on their doorposts. When God saw the blood, He passed over their homes.

This story is found in Exodus 12. The lamb’s blood protected the people. In the same way, Jesus is called the “Lamb of God” in John 1:29. His blood saves us from sin and death.

Jesus Predicts His Death and Resurrection

Jesus told His followers many times that He would die and rise again. He wanted them to be ready. But they did not understand until it happened.

In Mark 8:31, Jesus said: “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again.”

These words came true. Jesus died, and after three days, He rose again.

The First Easter Morning

On the first Easter morning, some women went to the tomb. They wanted to care for Jesus’ body. But when they got there, the stone was rolled away. The tomb was empty.

An angel told them that Jesus had risen. They ran to tell the others. Later, Jesus appeared to Mary Magdalene. Then He appeared to the disciples. He told them to share the good news with the whole world.

The Great Commission

After His resurrection, Jesus gave His followers a mission. He told them to go and make disciples. This is called the Great Commission.

Matthew 28:18-20 says: “Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.'”

Easter is not just something to remember. It is something to live out. Christians are called to share the message of Jesus with others.

Celebrating Easter Today

Christians around the world celebrate Easter in many ways. Some go to church. Some have special meals. Some take part in plays that tell the story of Jesus. But the most important thing is to remember what Jesus did.

We celebrate because Jesus is alive. We rejoice because He has conquered death. We have hope because He has given us new life.

Easter and Baptism

Baptism is another important part of the Easter message. It is a way for people to show that they belong to Jesus. When someone is baptized, they go under the water and come back up. This shows that they have died to their old life and have been raised to new life in Christ.

Romans 6:4 says: “We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.”

Easter reminds us that we can start fresh. We can leave behind our past and walk in the new life that Jesus gives.

The Power of Easter in Our Lives

Easter is not just a story from the past. It has power for today. Because Jesus rose from the dead, we can have peace. We can have joy. We can have victory over sin.

Philippians 3:10 says: “I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death.”

That same power that raised Jesus can work in our hearts. It can help us to love, forgive, and live with purpose.

Conclusion

The Bible makes it clear that Easter is about Jesus. It is about His love, His sacrifice, and His victory. The resurrection is proof that God keeps His promises. It is a call to faith and a reason to hope.

If you want to understand Easter, read the Gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Pray and ask God to help you see the truth. Easter is not just a holiday. It is the good news that changes everything.

As we celebrate Easter, let us remember what Jesus has done. Let us thank Him for His gift of salvation. And let us live each day with the hope that comes from knowing He is alive.
