The Book of Deuteronomy
Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Bible. It is the final book of the Torah, also called the Pentateuch. Moses is speaking to the Israelites. He is giving them instructions before they enter the Promised Land.
The word Deuteronomy means “second law.” It is not a new law but a restating of God’s commands. Moses wants the people to remember everything God has told them.
Israel’s Journey
The people of Israel had been in the wilderness for 40 years. They were about to cross over into Canaan, the land God promised them. But Canaan was not empty. There were many strong nations living there. These nations were larger and more powerful than Israel.
God was telling the Israelites that He would go before them. He would help them conquer the land. Moses reminded them that they were God’s chosen people. If they obeyed Him, they would win battles even against strong enemies.
Deuteronomy Chapter 7 Overview
Deuteronomy 7 gives instructions for dealing with the nations in Canaan. God commands Israel to destroy these nations completely. They were not to make treaties or intermarry with them. These nations followed other gods and would lead Israel astray.
God reminded His people that they were holy. He chose them not because they were many or strong, but because He loved them. He promised to bless them if they obeyed His commands.
Verses 17 to 24 speak specifically about conquering the enemy. God knew the people might fear the large nations. But He encouraged them to remember what He did in Egypt. He reminded them of how He brought them out with mighty signs and wonders.

This verse is a promise from God. He is assuring the people that He will help them win. He will not only give them victory, but He will deliver the enemy into their hands. This means God is the one doing the work. Israel just needs to trust and follow Him.
Deuteronomy 7:23 Meaning
God Is the Deliverer
The verse begins with, “But the Lord thy God shall deliver them unto thee…”
This reminds us that victory comes from God. The Israelites were not going to win because of their own strength. It was God who would hand the enemy over to them. In other words, He would make it easy for them to win.
In the same way, we must remember that our victories in life come from God. Whether we are facing a problem, fear, or temptation, we need to trust in Him. He is the one who gives us strength and help.
Total Destruction of Evil
The next part says, “…and shall destroy them with a mighty destruction…”
God does not only give partial victory. He gives total victory. The enemies were not just going to be defeated. They would be completely destroyed. This shows how serious God is about removing sin and evil from the land.
This was also a way to protect Israel. If the enemy remained, they could lead Israel into sin. God wanted His people to live in a pure land, free from idols and false gods.
God’s Power on Display
The verse ends with, “…until they be destroyed.”
This shows that God’s judgment is final. When He acts, nothing can stop Him. His power is complete. He does not leave the job half-done. His work is perfect.
This also teaches us about God’s nature. He is holy and just. He hates evil and will deal with it completely. For those who trust Him, this is a promise of safety. For those who oppose Him, it is a warning.
Deuteronomy 7:23 Application in Life
1. Trust in God for Victory
Sometimes we face challenges that seem too big. Maybe it’s a financial struggle, a health issue, or a broken relationship. We may feel weak and helpless.
But this verse reminds us that God is the one who delivers. He is stronger than any problem we face. We can trust Him to fight for us.
Romans 8:37 says, “Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.”
We are not fighting alone. God is with us.
2. Remove the Things That Draw Us Away from God
God told Israel to destroy the enemy completely. He didn’t want them to keep any part of those nations that could lead them to worship false gods.
In our lives, we may have habits, relationships, or influences that pull us away from God. We need to get rid of them. We must not make peace with sin.
Jesus said in Matthew 5:29, “If thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out.” That may sound extreme, but it shows how serious we must be about sin.
Ask yourself: What do I need to remove from my life so I can follow God more closely?
3. God’s Timing Is Perfect
Earlier in Deuteronomy 7, in verse 22, God says He will drive out the nations “little by little.” He didn’t do it all at once.
Sometimes we want instant results. But God works in His time. He knows what is best. His plan is always good, even if it takes time.
Maybe you are waiting for a prayer to be answered. Remember that God is working. Trust His timing.
4. Obedience Brings Blessing
Throughout Deuteronomy 7, God promises blessings if the people obey Him. He says He will love them, bless them, and multiply them. But this is connected to their obedience.
When we live according to God’s Word, we experience His blessings. That doesn’t mean life will be perfect, but it does mean He will walk with us. He will give us peace, strength, and joy.
Jesus said in John 14:15, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” Love and obedience go hand in hand.
5. Remember What God Has Done
In Deuteronomy 7:18-19, Moses tells the people to remember how God delivered them from Egypt. He wants them to think about God’s power in the past so they won’t be afraid of the future.
We can do the same. When we feel afraid, we should remember the times God helped us. Think about answered prayers, moments of peace, or times you felt His presence. These memories build our faith.
Psalm 77:11 says, “I will remember the works of the Lord: surely I will remember thy wonders of old.”
Conclusion
Deuteronomy 7:23 is a powerful promise. It shows us that God is the one who gives victory. He delivers our enemies into our hands. He destroys evil completely. His power is greater than anything we face.
This verse also reminds us to trust Him, obey Him, and remove anything that draws us away from Him. We must not fear, because the Lord is with us.
