Who Was the Mother of Noah?

by Jennifer

Among the most iconic figures in the Old Testament, Noah is remembered for his righteousness, obedience to God, and his central role in the story of the Great Flood. His narrative, found in the Book of Genesis, has influenced countless generations across Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions. However, while much is known about Noah’s life, his ark, and his sons, there is a notable omission in the biblical text — the identity of his mother.

The Biblical Account of Noah’s Family

The primary account of Noah’s genealogy is found in Genesis 5, where the generations from Adam to Noah are listed. The relevant passage is:“When Lamech had lived 182 years, he had a son. He named him Noah and said, ‘He will comfort us in the labor and painful toil of our hands caused by the ground the Lord has cursed.’” (Genesis 5:28–29, NIV)

From this passage, we know:

  • Noah’s father was Lamech, a descendant of Seth, the son of Adam.
  • Noah’s sons were Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
  • But the Bible does not mention the name of his mother.

This omission stands in contrast to the extensive genealogies found throughout Genesis. While some matriarchs are identified — such as Eve, Sarah, Rebekah, and Leah — many others are not. Noah’s mother is one of the most prominent unnamed women in early biblical history.

Why the Bible Does Not Name Noah’s Mother

1. Patriarchal Genealogies

The genealogies in Genesis are patriarchal in nature, focusing primarily on male descendants. This was a cultural norm in ancient Near Eastern societies, where inheritance, family lineage, and tribal identity were passed through male lines.

As such, the role of women, though crucial biologically and often spiritually, was not always emphasized in genealogical records. The absence of Noah’s mother’s name is consistent with this practice.

2. Narrative Focus

The Genesis account of Noah centers around his righteousness and obedience, especially in the face of a corrupt and violent world. The narrative aims to present Noah as a new Adam, a man from whom the post-flood world would emerge.

Including extensive details about his mother may have distracted from the theological focus of the story. The narrative aims to highlight God’s covenant with Noah, not his maternal heritage.

The Significance of the Silence

While the Bible remains silent about Noah’s mother, that silence is not without meaning. It reflects the broader biblical trend where women often influence events from the background. However, this should not imply a lack of importance. In fact, the very existence and survival of Noah, who becomes the progenitor of post-flood humanity, would not have been possible without his mother.

This raises important questions:

  • Who was she?
  • What can be inferred about her identity?
  • Why might the text have chosen to omit her name?

Jewish Traditions and Extra-Biblical Sources

To uncover possible clues about Noah’s mother, we turn to Jewish traditions and apocryphal texts, which occasionally attempt to fill in the gaps left by the Hebrew Bible.

1. Book of Jubilees

The Book of Jubilees, a Jewish religious text considered canonical by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church but non-canonical by most other traditions, offers additional genealogical information. In Jubilees 4:28, it states:“And in the twenty-fifth jubilee, in the seventh week in its sixth year, Adam died, and all his sons buried him in the land of his creation. And he was the first to be buried in the earth. And he lacked seventy years of one thousand years; for one thousand years are as one day in the testimony of the heavens and therefore was it written concerning the tree of knowledge: ‘On the day that ye eat thereof ye shall die.’ For this reason, he did not complete the years of this day; for he died during it. At the close of this jubilee Cain was killed after him in the same year; for his house fell upon him, and he died in the midst of his house, and he was killed by its stones. For with a stone he had killed Abel, and by a stone was he killed in righteous judgment. For this reason, it was ordained on the heavenly tables: With the instrument with which a man kills his neighbor with the same shall he be killed; after the manner that he wounded him, in like manner shall they deal with him.”

While this passage does not directly mention Noah’s mother, Jubilees 4:33 goes on to name her as Betenos, a daughter of Barakiel.

This would make Betenos the wife of Lamech, and thus Noah’s mother in this tradition.

2. Other Apocryphal Sources

Some medieval rabbinic writings also attempt to supply names, often based on genealogical speculation. For example:

The Genesis Rabbah, a midrashic commentary on Genesis, mentions that Lamech’s wife may have been Atun, though this is not universally accepted.

None of these names appear in the canonical Bible, and they remain unconfirmed. However, they show the interest of ancient Jewish scholars in tracing Noah’s maternal lineage, suggesting that the question of his mother’s identity was the subject of serious reflection.

The Role of Noah’s Mother: What We Can Infer

Though her name is unknown, Noah’s mother must have been an extraordinary woman. Several inferences can be made about her based on the context of Noah’s life:

1. A Woman of Righteousness

Noah was described in Genesis 6:9 as “a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God.” Such virtue does not appear in a vacuum. It is reasonable to believe that his character was shaped not only by Lamech but also by his mother.

Women in ancient times were primarily responsible for early childrearing and religious instruction. If Noah grew up in a world steeped in wickedness, but still managed to remain pure, it suggests that his home environment was morally strong — and his mother likely played a key role in that.

2. A Survivor in a Corrupt World

Genesis describes Noah’s generation as one full of violence and corruption. For his mother to raise a righteous son under such conditions would have taken courage, moral strength, and spiritual insight. Her survival through this moral chaos hints at her resilience and faithfulness.

3. A Woman of Legacy

Though she is unnamed, her spiritual and biological legacy is immense. She is the mother not only of Noah but, through him, the grandmother of all post-flood humanity. That makes her a second matriarch, akin to Eve, in the biblical timeline.

Lessons from the Unnamed Mother of Noah

Despite her anonymity, Noah’s mother teaches several enduring lessons:

1. Influence Beyond Recognition

In a world that often recognizes public figures but overlooks those behind the scenes, the story of Noah’s mother reminds us that unseen influence can change the world. Without her, there would be no Noah — and without Noah, humanity would have perished in the Flood.

2. Faithfulness in Silence

Even when not named or praised, her actions would have contributed to shaping a man chosen by God to preserve life and establish a covenant. She is a testament to the power of quiet faithfulness.

3. The Importance of Mothers in Salvation History

From Eve to Mary, the mother of Jesus, biblical mothers play critical roles in the unfolding of God’s redemptive plan. Noah’s mother belongs in that lineage, even if history has forgotten her name.

Conclusion

Though the Bible does not name the mother of Noah, her role in salvation history is indisputable. Through tradition and theological reflection, we can understand her as a woman of moral strength, spiritual influence, and historical significance.

Whether called Betenos, Atun, or by no name at all, Noah’s mother symbolizes the hidden but vital roles women have played throughout biblical history. Her life — shrouded in mystery — serves as a profound reminder that God often works through the unseen and the unnamed, using their quiet faith to shape the destiny of nations.
