The book of Numbers is part of the first five books of the Bible, also known as the Torah or the Pentateuch. These books were written by Moses, the leader of Israel, under God’s direction. Numbers records the journey of the Israelites as they traveled from Mount Sinai to the edge of the Promised Land.
The Israelites had left Egypt, where they were slaves. Now they were a free people, forming a nation under God’s leadership. God gave them laws and guidance for how to live as His chosen people.
Getting Ready to Enter the Promised Land
By Numbers chapter 35, the Israelites are close to entering the land of Canaan, the land God promised to their ancestors. God is now giving final instructions for how the land should be divided.
Each tribe of Israel would receive a portion of the land. But the tribe of Levi, known as the Levites, was different. They were not to receive a large area of land like the other tribes. Instead, they had a special role: to serve God in the Tabernacle (and later the Temple), to teach the Law, and to help lead the people spiritually.
Because of their special role, God provided for them in a different way.

This verse gives a specific command to all the other tribes. They were to give cities from their land to the Levites, along with land around those cities for their use. This ensured that the Levites had homes and resources, even though they had no land of their own.

“Command the children of Israel”
This command was not optional. It came directly from God. Moses was to instruct all the tribes to give a portion of their inheritance to the Levites. This shows that God cared deeply about the well-being and proper placement of His servants.
God expected the people to support those who served Him. This idea carries into the New Testament too (1 Corinthians 9:13–14).
“That they give unto the Levites… cities to dwell in”
The Levites were not given their own separate territory like the other tribes. Instead, they were spread throughout the land, living in cities within the territories of the other tribes.
This was very important. The Levites were not just priests—they were spiritual leaders and teachers. By living among the people, they could teach God’s law and guide the community in worship and justice.
This structure helped ensure that every part of Israel had access to spiritual leadership and instruction.
“Ye shall give also unto the Levites suburbs for the cities round about them”
These “suburbs” were not suburbs in the modern sense of neighborhoods. In Hebrew, the word refers to open land surrounding the cities. These lands were used for grazing animals, gardens, and possibly burial grounds.
Each Levitical city was to have a radius of open space around it, providing land for the basic needs of the Levite families.
This part of the verse shows God’s concern for the practical and daily life of His people. He didn’t just assign spiritual tasks; He made sure His servants had what they needed to live.
Numbers 35:2 Application in Life
This ancient verse still speaks deeply to us today. Here are some practical lessons we can learn from Numbers 35:2:
1. God Provides for His Servants
God made sure the Levites were not forgotten. Though they did not have large land portions, God provided homes, land, and resources through the generosity of others.
Today, God still calls people to serve Him in full-time ministry. And He still provides for them—often through the giving and support of the wider church. This reminds us that it is good and right to support pastors, missionaries, and spiritual leaders.
The Apostle Paul wrote, “Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel” (1 Corinthians 9:14, KJV). Just as the Levites were cared for, so today’s ministers of the Word should also be cared for.
2. Spiritual Influence Should Be Present in Every Community
The Levites lived among the people, not apart from them. Their presence helped keep Israel focused on God. They were counselors, judges, worship leaders, and teachers.
We can learn from this model. God wants believers to live among the world, not isolated from it. Our presence brings light to dark places. Every town, school, and workplace should feel the influence of godly people.
Jesus called us the salt of the earth and the light of the world (Matthew 5:13–14). That means we are meant to be present, active, and visible in our communities—just like the Levites.
3. The Church Should Be Generous
The other tribes were expected to give cities and land to the Levites. This giving was sacrificial. It cost them part of their inheritance. But it was necessary and right.
Today, God still calls His people to be generous. We are to give cheerfully, not reluctantly (2 Corinthians 9:7). When we support the work of God, we show our love for Him and help advance His Kingdom.
Giving is not just about money. It also includes time, hospitality, encouragement, and service.
4. Every Role in the Kingdom of God Is Important
The Levites had a different job than the other tribes. They didn’t fight in the same way. They didn’t farm large pieces of land. They didn’t have tribal power. But their job was just as important.
Today, we also have different roles in the Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12). Some preach, some serve, some give, some teach. All are needed. No role is too small. Every believer has a purpose in God’s plan.
5. Balance Between Spiritual and Practical Needs
God gave the Levites both cities (for living) and suburbs (for their needs). This shows that God values both our spiritual life and our physical well-being.
In ministry, it’s easy to focus only on spiritual matters and neglect rest, family, or daily needs. But God’s design includes both. He cares about where we live, what we eat, and how we rest. He wants us to have balance.
As believers, we must care for others in the same way—spiritually and practically. James 2:15–16 says that if we see someone in need but do not help, our faith is not complete.
